What Does the 2012 Election Result Mean for The Green Suits ...

What does President Obama?s re-election win mean for The Green Suits? Plenty. Photo h/t WhiteHouse.gov.

I am glad that the election season is over. Living in a Swing State (Virginia), I was inundated with hundreds of robo-calls, direct mail pieces, and other stuff?most of it was from the candidate who I didn?t vote for.

And the post-election quiet is wonderful.

The 2012 election?which gave President Obama a substantial re-election win?is most welcome news to the Sustainability and CSR community. And what does it mean for The Green Suits (the ambitious executives interested in green business careers)? Plenty.

The Green Suits may no longer follow the ?green jobs? frame as it did four years ago. But what is clear is that many start-up businesses?and new jobs?will benefit the New Green Economy and provide employment to millions. Here are a few reasons why.

  • All eyes are on energy, and on reducing and eliminating the United States? reliance on foreign sources of it. While some of the domestic energy gains will involve new oil exploration, a considerable portion will come from alternative energy sources?solar, wind, tidal, geothermal, and biomass. Executive job creation in alternative energy will expand across all talent sets?from engineering and manufacturing to marketing and new business development.
  • We?re building stuff, again. From water filtration systems to smart-grid technology and the next generation of batteries to power electric vehicles, the United States is primed to build and export dazzling new ?green? technology across the globe.
  • Extreme weather is here to stay.?In the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy, new strategies are immediately needed to mitigate extreme weather effects such as tidal surges, flooding, and extended loss of power. Urgency and market opportunity will draw much thought leadership and create openings for non-profit organizations to better address the needs of people severely impacted by weather (and climate).
  • Millennials voted for The New Green Economy. The enormous (bigger than the ?Baby Boom?) cohort which was raised on environmental consciousness is entering the work world en masse?and some Millennials are already taking seats in the Board Room. Millennials are shaping Triple Bottom Line policy and will drive the New Green Economy to success for decades.

For the Green Suits, the past four years were strange, frustrating, and utterly disappointing. The so-called Great Recession and the efforts of some in Congress, in super-PACs, and in trade associations like the U.S. Chamber of Commerce created barriers to our successful entry in the New Green Economy. While the blockade?in Congress may still be a factor, I do feel that the fortunes of The Green Suits are about to get a lot better. Once we get past the ?Fiscal Cliff,? 2013 could be the turnaround year.

Enjoy your time with friends and family on Thanksgiving Day. We have much to be thankful for. And we know that our best days lie ahead.
