Oil price ending 2011 near $100 a barrel

(AP) ? The price of oil soared in 2011 and will finish about 19 percent higher, on average, after a volatile year dominated by concerns about global supplies.

The surge in oil and gasoline prices will continue to put pressure on the U.S. economy as it struggles to grow in 2012, analysts said. "It's like leaving the parking brake on while you're trying to drive the economy forward," said Michael Lynch, president of Strategic Energy & Economic Research.

Benchmark crude rose by 8 cents to $99.73 per barrel in afternoon trading on Friday, the final trading day of the year.

Overall in 2011, crude prices averaged $95.09 per barrel in New York. That's up from $79.64 in 2010 and from $62.11 in 2009. The Energy Department expects prices to rise further in 2012 to an average of $98 per barrel.

After starting the year at $91.38 per barrel, oil prices jumped in February as an anti-government rebellion began in Libya. International oil companies pulled employees from the country as the fighting escalated, and oil production was essentially halted for several months.

About 1.5 million barrels of daily oil exports were cut off during the Libyan uprising. That's less than 2 percent of what the world uses, but with demand rising to 88 million barrels per day, every last drop mattered. Oil prices jumped 25 percent from the middle of February to the first week in March.

The price of benchmark West Texas crude rose as high as $113.93 a barrel in April, then dropped to $75.67 by October.

Prices are again flirting with $100 per barrel following threats from Iran to close key shipping lanes in the Persian Gulf. Iran, which has been accused of trying to build a nuclear weapon, has been threatening to shut down the Strait of Hormuz if the U.S. and other countries target the country with new sanctions.

The waterway is a key route in and out of the Persian Gulf, used by tankers carrying one-sixth of the world's oil exports.

As oil prices rose this year, the global economy cut back on fuel consumption. A private survey released Friday showed that Chinese manufacturing activity slowed in December for a second month due to weak global demand amid U.S. and European economic woes.

In the U.S., gasoline demand dropped nearly 2 percent overall in 2011, according to the Energy Department. Pump prices are down 72 cents per gallon since peaking in May near $4 per gallon ($1.05 a liter). On Friday the national average for a gallon of regular was $3.269 (86 cents a liter), according to AAA, Wright Express and Oil Price Information Service. Analysts expect the average pump to rise to $4 a gallon again by spring.

In other energy trading Friday, heating oil rose 2.3 cents to $2.9405 per gallon, and gasoline futures rose 3.88 cents to $2.7189 per gallon. Natural gas futures fell by 3.5 cents to $2.992 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Brent crude fell 1 cent to $108 per barrel in London.

Milk intake in teens tied to later prostate cancer (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) ? Older Icelandic men who remember chugging a lot of milk in their teens are three times as likely to be diagnosed with advanced prostate cancer as more-moderate milk drinkers, researchers have found.

That makes them wonder whether the years around puberty, during which the prostate matures, could be a time of heightened vulnerability for the gland.

"We believe that our data are indeed solid and provide important evidence for the role of adolescence as a 'sensitive period' for prostate cancer development," Johanna Torfadottir, a nutrition scientist and a graduate student at the University of Iceland, told Reuters Health by email.

"However, we remain cautious in our interpretation," she added. "Causal inferences are not made on one study alone, thus more studies are needed to confirm our findings and also to explore possible mechanism behind this association."

So far, she added, the two studies on prostate cancer and milk intake in adolescents have come to mixed conclusions -- one found milk lovers seemed to be somewhat protected against the disease, while the other found no link at all.

But both studies were small and couldn't distinguish between advanced and early-stage tumors, Torfadottir said.

By contrast, Iceland offers the perfect "natural experiment," she and her colleagues write in the American Journal of Epidemiology.

The country had little infrastructure in the early part of the 20th century, so people in rural areas tended to live off the land. That included lots of milk from farm animals in central regions of the island, whereas the drink was scarce in seaside villages.

For their study, the researchers used data from more than 2,200 men born between 1907 and 1937. These men had been part of a medical study started in the 1960s and, in the early 2000s, had answered questions about their diet in early and mid-life as part of another study.

Among 463 men who recalled drinking milk less than once a day in their teens, one percent developed advanced prostate cancer or died of the disease over a quarter century of follow-up.

That figure was three percent among the more than 1,800 men who said they drank milk at least daily in adolescence.

The gap couldn't be explained by how often people had gone to the doctor for check-ups, their education or other foods they ate, such as fish or meat.

How much milk men drank had no connection to their risk of early-stage tumors, however. And intake in midlife -- the age group most other studies have focused on -- didn't seem to matter either.

Torfadottir said there are several physiological mechanisms that might, in principle, explain the link between she found. But at this point, all of them remain speculative.

"From these data alone we cannot recommend that teenage boys should chance their dietary habits," she said. "We are only looking at the risk of one disease, prostate cancer, and obviously risks of other conditions, e.g. bone health, need to be considered."

PREMATURE TO SAY 'CAUSES'

Dr. Matthew Cooperberg, a urologist at the University of California, San Francisco, agreed.

"It would be premature to say that drinking milk causes prostate cancer," he told Reuters Health. "You can talk about association, but it is hard to prove causality."

He added that people shouldn't be wary of drinking milk.

"There are plenty of health benefits from drinking milk in adolescence," Cooperberg said.

Torfadottir also ventured a bit of nutritional advice, noting that it's "important to have a balanced diet and moderate milk consumption is a part of that."

NFL Power Rankings: Giants win big, so now what's...

The Giants won New York and New Jersey for the NFC Saturday and the Daily News power rankings concur. The NFC is the power conference, with the top three teams in the next-to-last regular season poll.

The Packers continue in the top spot, where they've been since they defeated the Saints in the first game of the year, a victory that looms ever larger now. Had the Saints won at Lambeau Field that night, they would be in line for the top seed right now. With the way their offense has been rolling in the Superdome, they would be the clear Super Bowl favorites.

The surprising 49ers continue in the third spot, followed by three AFC teams, the Patriots, Ravens and Steelers, who might as well be 4-a, b and c.

As for the locals, the Giants climbed five spots to No. 11, ahead of the Cowboys, whom they face with everything on the line in the last game of the NFL season. The Jets dropped two spots to No. 17.

1. (1) Packers (14-1): An imperfect season, an imperfect team, but still the NFL's best.

2. (2) Saints (12-3): Unbeatable at home.

3. (3) 49ers (12-3): Best defense in football.

4. (4) Patriots (12-3): Top seed will be very beatable.

5. (5) Ravens (11-4): A lot depends on securing first-round bye, home field.

6. (6) Steelers (11-4): Will they rest Roethlisberger against Browns?

7. (9) Lions (10-5): Getting hot again at right time.

8. (7) Texans (10-5): Can they win a playoff game with T.J. Yates?

9. (8) Falcons (9-6): Bad news for Falcs: Saints could be first-round foe.

10. (14) Bengals (9-6): Final game vs. Ravens will define this team in every way.

11. (16) GIANTS (8-7): Great win. Now what?

12. (12) Cowboys (8-7): They got themselves into this mess.

13. (13) Seahawks (7-8): No playoffs but 2012 holds promise.

14. (18) Eagles (7-8): What a waste of a season.

15. (10) Broncos (8-7): Tebow magic wearing off.

16. (19) Raiders (8-7): Catch break with Chargers eliminated.

17. (15) JETS (8-7): Shhhhhhhhhhhhh.

18. (20) Titans (8-7): Loss to Colts could cost them playoffs.

19. (11) Chargers (7-8): Bad loss in Detroit dooms Norv.

20. (17) Cardinals (7-8): Slow start killed them this year.

21. (21) Bears (7-8): A season that could have been goes down the tubes.

22. (22) Dolphins (6-9): They'll be psyched to take down Jets.

23. (24) Panthers (6-9): Next year looks promising.

24. (23) Redskins (5-10): Bad Rex shows up again.

25. (25) Chiefs (6-9): Still motivated to ruin Broncos' season.

26. (27) Bills (6-9): Forced Tebow's worst game.

27. (26) Browns (4-11): Stuck in the wrong division.

28. (28) Jaguars (4-11): Beating Colts would bring Andrew Luck into the division.

29. (30) Vikings (3-12): Fears about Adrian Peterson trump all.

30. (29) Bucs (4-11): Worst defense in football, by far.

31. (32) Colts (2-13): Not much sucking for Luck now.

32. (31) Rams (2-13): Spags (10-37 in St. Loo): Eagles next D-coordinator?

For Christmas (or whatever the 0bama household calls it) someone should have gotten Pres. 0bama a sign for his desk saying something like ''Hardly Working'' or perhaps ''Look Busy, Do Nothing.'' Every time he plays golf, it creates a huge job for the secret service.
And every time he plays golf at a military base, he displaces the troops who paid for, and maintain the golf course.
I doubt that his narcissistic personality disorder allows him to recognize what a pain in the butt his golfing is to everyone affected.
And because he is the dumbest man in the room, he very likely thinks the military golf courses are paid for out of the defense budget.

One of the issues that bothers me the least is when the top official in the most important country in the world takes a little R&R on the golf course.

Goodness, I wish his opponents would express criticism of his policies rather than his personal relaxation away from that stressful and totally involving job.

Keeping track of his recreation activities is on a CS par with constantly cricizing his wife's appearance, etc. It's childish and counter-productive. Shame on journalist Erika Johnsen for trying to stir up the political juvenile delinquents.

When Obama plays on a military course he and his buddies pay no greens fees.Their play is paid for out the non appropriated morale and welfare funds intended for our troops' recreation and welfare. So in effect the Commander in Chief is stealing from our troops. Also when he plays, the courses are shut down for play by military members. No one would begrudge the president an occasional round on a military course--but over 90 times? Every other golfing president has found that there are a number of outstanding private courses in the DC area which would be happy to host the president.

Every President has come under scrutiny for his personal and official actions while in office. Obviously, the modern Presidency being more subject to the scrutiny of the press than in previous decades/centuries. Of course, Republican Presidents getting much more withering attacks from the press, including their minor children while Democrats enjoy a much more respectful approach. When you have a President who talks wbout the working poor, expressing sympathy with the Occupy crowd, and continues to blame his predecessor, then I say every hour that he is on a golf course, every minute that his wife is lecturing us, etc should be broadcast loud and clear. Besides, when his political opposition does legitimately attack his policies, we get called racists.

Bush, who played golf only a fraction as much as Zippy had to quit playing because of all the criticism in the press that he was playing while American soldiers were dying in Afghanistan. Out of respect for their sacrifice, Bush put aside his clubs and never played again during his administration. Well, American soldiers are still dying in Afghanistan but Zippy hasn't missed a sigle opportunity to hit the linx by a factor of about 20 to 1. Not so surprisingly, the press says nothing and in fact plays up how much he needs the rest from the stress of his job. The hypocracy of you "progressives" is absolutley breath taking!

As an early-and-often chronicler of Chicago-on-the-Potomac, I am amazed at the stubborn and clingy persistence of President Barack Obama's snowblowers in the media. See no scandal, hear no scandal, speak no scandal. Dartmouth College professor Brendan Nyhan asserted in May ? while Operation Fast and Furious subpoenas were flying on Capitol Hill ? that "one of the least remarked upon aspects of the Obama presidency has been the lack of scandals." Conveniently, he defines scandal as a "widespread elite perception of wrongdoing."

The answer, of course, is more ?stimulus? and increased spending on overpriced college tuitions: ?I really hope he gives us a big choice.? Friedman also said the Republicans are looking for someone who can be as smart and ?mellifluous? as Obama: ?And I think Newt's rise is speaking to us.

Arlen Specter is a reasonably tough guy. He has survived two forms of cancer and multiple election losses with few public complaints. But in his new memoir "Life Among the Cannibals," set for publication in late March, Mr. Specter, 81, acknowledges more than a few psychic bruises, including one incurred during a visit to Carnegie Mellon University in June 2010.

It is time for Republicans to get serious. After flirting with just about every candidate in a large presidential field, is is time to come home to the one candidate who has the demonstrated ability to run the largest organization in the United States, the Executive Branch of the federal government; who has never been touched by the slightest taint of scandal; whose success in the private sector makes him the outsider that Republicans say they are looking for; and who has by far the best chance of beating President Obama: Mitt Romney. Politico's Jake Sherman reports this gem from the trail in Portsmouth, NH: Twice during an hour-long event here, Mitt Romney dinged Newt Gingrich for failing to qualify for the Virginia ballot. First, he met a man named Virginia, to which he responded ''I'm on the ballot in Virginia, that's good news.'' Then asked by a reporter about the former speaker's inability to garner the signatures needed by the commonwealth, Romney went at Gingrich harder. ''I think he compared that to.. Pearl Harbor,'' Romney said. ''I think its more like Lucille Ball at the chocolate factory.

Alan Simons was enjoying a Sunday morning bicycle ride with his family in Asheville, N.C., two years ago when a man in a sport utility vehicle suddenly pulled alongside him and started berating him for riding on the highway. Mr. Simons, his 4-year-old son strapped in behind him, slowed to a halt. The driver, Charles Diez, an Asheville firefighter, stopped as well. When Mr. Simons walked over, he found himself staring down the barrel of a gun. ?Go ahead, I?ll shoot you,? Mr. Diez said, according to Mr. Simons. ?I?ll kill you.? Mr. Simons turned to leave but

Wrap Christmas Lights Around a Coffee Can to Keep Them Organized and Untangled for Next Year [Organization]

Wrap Christmas Lights Around a Coffee Can to Keep Them Organized and Untangled for Next Year Now that the holidays are coming to a close, you may be thinking about taking down the lights, ornaments, and other decorations you put up for the season and stashing them away for another year. Before you do, save yourself the frustration of tangled balls of Christmas lights come December of next year by using an old coffee can to keep everything organized. Just put one end into the top of the can, and spool the lights around the can so they stay untangled.

The folks at Real Simple initially suggest that you visit your local craft store and pick up a holiday light reel (about $15 at Amazon) or spool to get the job done, but if you don't want to spend money, they note that a coffee can works just as well. Just cut a slot in the top of the can, feed one end of the lights through (the end with the plug works best since it'll get caught in the opening) and spool away. Plus, you can toss in replacement bulbs and other extension cords inside the can so they don't get separated from the lights.

They also have some suggestions on how to store your ornaments safely for next year, but odds are you have a method for that already. When do you plan to take down your decorations? This week, or after New Year's? Let us know in the comments below.

Christmas morning blaze kills 5 in Connecticut family (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? An elderly couple and their three granddaughters were killed when fire roared through a house in Stamford, Connecticut, early on Christmas morning. Two people, including the girls' mother, survived, authorities said.

Stamford Mayor Michael Pavia and acting Fire Chief Antonio Conte confirmed the deaths from the scene of the three-alarm blaze, which erupted just before 5 a.m. in the Shippan Point neighborhood near the city's harbor.

"It is a terrible, terrible day ... We lost five residents this morning," Pavia said in a video posted on the Stamford Advocate newspaper's website.

"This is Christmas Day. There probably has not been a worse Christmas Day in the city of Stamford ... Our hearts and prayers go out to the family and to emergency personnel on the scene," he added.

The owner of the house was identified as Madonna Badger, "and the people who perished were her mother and father, who were visiting ... and her three children -- three girls, (one aged) 10, and 7-year old twins," Stamford Police Department Detective Paul Guzda told Reuters.

Badger and a male acquaintance, described as a contractor who was working on the house, were injured in the fire but were expected to make a full recovery, Guzda said. Both survivors were middle-aged, he said.

Firefighters attempted to rescue those trapped in the burning house, but "they were pushed back by intense flame and heat," Conte said. He added that the cause of the fire was under investigation.

Video footage showed flames engulfing a house in a residential district of large homes.

Emergency workers later recovered the victims' bodies, but Conte said it could take a number of days for investigators to determine the origins of the blaze.

Stamford is located on Connecticut's shore on Long Island Sound, about 40 miles northeast of New York City.

CSI globalVCard

I've been very excited over the past few months to watch virtual payment systems mature. As a technology, virtual payment systems and other kinds of "smart" payment systems (like near-field communication chips) have been available to us for a much longer time than we've been available to them, due to lack of infrastructure and other adoption stoppers. It feels like it's all starting to fall into place, though. CSI globalVCard (free for apps; requires account) is one of the services that makes me optimistic about wider adoption of smart payment systems. CSI globalVCard is a virtual credit card service designed to help businesses make their accounting systems much simpler?although the potential for personal and family use is at the front of my mind, too.

You have to have a specific corporate credit card account (CSI Corporate Card, issued in this case by Regions Bank) to use the free globalVCard app for iOS (both iPhone and iPad), Android, and BlackBerry. Those apps let you issue individual virtual credit cards from the corporate account to specific employees. Each card has a specified amount, and can include restrictions such as types of purchases allowed and number of uses allowed. The globalVCard system provides a much easier and simpler process for expense reports than reimbursement?because there is no expense report! The purchases are, in effect, approved before they happen.

As enthusiastic as I am about the prospects for the CSI globalVCard system, having tested it, I do think it needs a few more iterations to mature fully. Data visibility, reports from the system, and a few other features should get better over time, but for now, they are a little rudimentary. CSI globalVCard offers an amazing service, and if I had a small business, I would gladly sign up now to get the benefits of what is offered while awaiting new features that will hopefully be added soon.

The Name Explained: CSI globalVCard
"CSI globalVCard" doesn't exactly roll off the tongue, but the name is easier to remember once you realize that the "VCard" part stands for "virtual credit card."

The first half the name is trickier. "CSI" comes from Corporate Spending Innovations,?which operates the globalVCard mobile apps and website. GlobalVCard is the part to remember, though, as it's the keyword you'll need to search for the free app for iOS (both iPhone and iPad), Android, and BlackBerry. With an account, you can also manage the service via the globalVCard website.

What You Need
To use CSI globalVCard, you need a CSI Corporate Card credit line or prefund account.?That requirement alone may make the service sound pretty restrictive, but it's no more restrictive than what's required for Google Wallet (NFC) (4 stars, free with account)?a Nexus 4G phone with Sprint service and a Google Wallet account or Citi MasterCard account. As I mentioned previously, a lack of infrastructure still holds back virtual payment and NFC services, and limits their reach.

Once you have the credit card account, you can sign up for a free account with globalVCard, which takes only a moment. You'll also want to download the app you intend to use and set a four-digit PIN.
