3 Key Ideas from Digital Book World 2013 | Publishing Perspectives

Digital Book World Conference 2013

By Edward Nawotka, Editor-in-Chief

Price Innovation

The best ebook marketing strategy appears to be simple: price manipulation. Generally speaking, the lower the price, the more units you will sell. And prices are heading lower the Book Industry Study Group confirmed when it noted that over the last four years the average price of ebooks has slid from $10 to $6. And a bit of Kitchen Sink wisdom here: cut-price sales work. Kindle Daily Deals drive big buys, but don?t expect a long term impact, as the halo effect of the resulting jump in sales ranking is shrinking, especially as the market becomes saturated with competing titles.

But trade publishers should note that not every ebook buyer is a bargain basement shopper. ?Independent bookstore shoppers are different,? noted Michael Tamblyn, Chief Content Officer, Kobo. Looking at data from the first few months of his company?s partnership with the American Booksellers Association, he said that more than 50% of the books sold have been priced at ?$9.99 and above,? versus less than ?30% for the average US consumer.?

Unfortunately, ?we haven?t seen price innovation in physical retail,? said Michael Cader, conference co-organizer and CEO of PublishersMarketplace. ?Price innovation has driven digital sales, but where is it at the physical bookstores? Where are the ?daily deals? at the retail level that drives people into the store and motivates consumers?? The ultimate question, he added: ?Who is going to pay for the bookstores??

But why, at a digital publishing conference, would someone be talking about bookstores?

Discoverability

Bookstores ? yes, bricks-and-mortar bookstores ?continue to drive book discovery for consumers. ?E-tailers, simply put, are not filling the book discovery gap,? said Peter Hildick-Smith, Founder & CEO of the Codex Group, stating that physical bookstores accounted for 20% of book discovery and online booksellers, while online booksellers represented just 7% over the overall discovery pie.

And despite the fact that the more than $1.4 billion has been spent on advertising for ereaders and tablets between 2010 and 2012, online marketing ?still accounts for just 10%? of book discovery.

?Marketing is going to have to become much more data driven, much more targeted,? admitted Chantal Restivo-Alessi, Chief Digital Officer, HarperCollins. ?We need to be much more continuous in the dialogue we establish with the consumer. We need to be focused on our costs. We need to think about where to spend more money and time in that engagement.?

But don?t think that social media is a silver bullet. Even Teddy Goff, Digital Director for Obama?s 2012 re-election campaign, admitted the limitations. The overuse of social media as a sales channel can strain a relationship. Swapping sales for fundraising, Goff noted, ?maybe we raised $1 million on social media, but it might not always have been the best use of the medium and we could have used the channel to communicate a different message that would have attracted a broader audience. One or two emails might have been just as effective in fundraising.?

When it comes to book marketing, ?it is hard to generalize and depends on the category,? said Nina von Moltke, SVP, Director of Digital Publishing Development, Random House. ?Someone with an amazing social presence might not have the sales.? She added that, ?display still matters, co-op still matters. Having a book visible on the store level is all important for discoverability.?

To this end, von Molke said Random House had invested in ?consumer insights? and established a whole team to parse the analytics and data. ?Ultimately, what we all want to achieve is maximizing models.?

Of course, once a reader ?discovers? a book, converting them into a buyer is another matter altogether. Convincing buyers to stop showrooming in bookstores and opting for a cheaper option online is going to be the next great challenge.

Authenticity

No matter what a publisher does to get books in front of readers, it has to ring true. ?Inauthentic marketing doesn?t work,? said Carolyn Pittis, SVP, Publishing Transformation at HarperCollins.

Random House has been praised recently for the authenticity of its Facebook page, which focuses more on promoting the content of a book, rather than using the medium as a sales channel. Naturally, there is some cynicism about this approach in the industry. ?You can become very popular on Facebook very quickly?provided you?re willing to pay for it,? said the digital marketing director of a rival company in a curt dismissal of Random House?s Facebook success.

It was a bit of brisk honesty at an event that, if anything, that demonstrated the publishing industry has settled on politeness and dialed back the hyperbolic ?end of the world? rhetoric and ?come to Jesus? digital evangelizing that has marked such gatherings in recent years.

Maybe it was the surfeit of new data that has had an ameliorative effect. Executives are often more comfortable with spreadsheets and statistics than they are with capital ?C? culture and anecdote. Alas, publishing statistics, no matter how rigorously acquired, always demand a degree of skepticism, particularly when they are delivered with no context or the opportunity to question them.

In just one example, Kobo is claiming that it has secured 20% of the global ebook business, but that number appears to be derived not from direct ebook sales, but from supply chain component orders for their devices. If their stated claim of 12 million worldwide customers is accurate (and it should be, since they can count them), a rough extrapolation would suggest they have 2.4 million ?power buyers? ? the proverbial 20% of the population who buy 80% of books. Are 2.4 million consumer supporting 20% of the global ebook business?

Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Google, and a little company called Apple ? one with quarterly revenue equivalent to the entire annual global book business and has gained a considerable percentage of the global market share in the past year ? might want to challenge those figures.

How To Delegate Responsibility To Other People - Business Insider

UPS

This is the second of a four-part series called "Big Ideas Small Business." This new editorial series spotlights the best practices for small business leaders working to grow their companies. "Big Ideas, Small Business" is sponsored by The UPS Store.

Scaling a business is an extremely nuanced process: It takes a brilliant strategy, smart delegation and tons of hard work. To gain some insight on how to pull this off, we spoke with Harvard Lecturer Robert Pozen, who offers some great tips on building an efficient workplace culture in his book Extreme Productivity.

Here are the best parts of our conversation:

As you grow, managing well is really about effective delegation. How do you figure out what you still should be working on, versus what to outsource?

That depends a lot on the type of business you?re with and types of people you?re working with. The question isn?t whether you're better at the function than anybody else. The question is, can you as the founder be the only person to do it? The classic problem as an entrepreneur is that they have a hard time delegating. But that?s really crazy. Recruiting other executives is critical, so is dealing with customers and dealing with regulators. Those are functions that only the top founders can do.

The way you delegate is that first you have to hire people that you really have confidence in. You won?t truly let those people feel a sense of autonomy if you don?t have confidence in them. For example, you tell an employee they need to develop a new product in a particular niche. But if you go further and say they should go about it this way, then you?re micromanaging and depriving that person of feeling any sense of control over their situation.

If you want to keep an entrepreneurial mindset within the culture, you've got to be ready for people to make mistakes ? and they will. It's fine to make a new mistake once. You've got to be very tolerant of people making mistakes for the first time. But then if it happens again and again, you've got to have a discussion.

How do you balance strategic thinking against everyday tasks?

It's hard to answer the question in the abstract. There's a priority exercise that I urge people to go through (discussed in our previous interview here). What do you want to achieve? Who's the best person to do it? Make sure that your goals align with how you spend your time.

It's important to reduce the number of decisions you make every day (because making decisions depletes energy and brain power.) Most people get overwhelmed by the insignificant decisions of their lives. I?m urging people to minimize the time spent on these when they?re not critical to their most important goals.

What's the key to using the 80/20 rule, or Pareto Principle, on a daily basis?

Everything we talked about starts with this: if you don?t know what your priority of the year is and how that translates to this week, you?re not going to know what?s important to you. A shocking number of people don?t do that. Even the people who do never compare how they?re using time as compared to their goals.

If you go through those two exercises I mention in my book, you'll get a lot more focused on what?s important and discover what you should and shouldn?t be doing.

At the end of the day, it all comes down to getting the goals right and understanding how much time you?re spending on tasks, and trying to figure out where your comparative advantage is as a leader vs. as a producer ? and what only you can do as a leader.

California Gov. Jerry Brown Spurs Online Education Action

California Gov. Jerry Brown has been pushing online courses as one way for the state's universities to expand access to students and reduce student costs. And he's getting results.

A June 2012 phone call from the governor to Sebastian Thrun, co-founder and CEO of Udacity, sparked an agreement between the online course provider and San Jose State University that was announced on Tuesday, Jan. 15.

"That hour changed my life," Thrun said in a press conference.

The agreement sets up a pilot of three classes offered for credit to 300 students. Registration opened on Tuesday for the pre-algebra, college algebra and elementary statistics courses that will begin on Jan. 30. The courses will also be offered online without credit or charge to anyone who wants to join.

Five San Jose faculty members are the instructors of record and retain intellectual property rights to the classes they develop with Udacity. Mentors will support the students, and a National Science Foundation research grant will be used to study the effectiveness of these courses.

This is basically a research and development project to figure out the role of faculty, what technology can assist with, and whether students can learn and advance in this pilot, said Timothy White, chancellor of the California State University System. Then the system will figure out whether it can be scaled up while still maintaining the learning environment students need to be successful.

"Part of educating California's students today is to not only challenge them intellectually, but also to support them to succeed," White said.

In each class, 50 San Jose State students and 50 non-San Jose State students will pay $150 per person to earn college credit from the university for the course. A typical university course would cost about $450, with half paid by the student and half paid by the state, said San Jose State University President Mohammad Qayoumi in a press conference.

The university plans to give priority for the non-San Jose State slots to high school and community college students, as well as military members, veterans and waitlisted San Jose State students.

"Ultimately, we would like to build a high-quality, cost-efficient way to bring our curriculum to students anytime, anywhere, as soon as they are ready, whether they are in high school, community college, university or in the workplace," Qayoumi said.

With the billions of dollars that the state spends on schools, California has a right to get better results for itself and for students, Brown said. Sixty percent of California State University students go straight to remedial courses, and 70 percent fail math and English entry tests at the community college level.

And as the nation's older population dwarfs that of the school and work force population, the next generation of students will have to be smarter.

"If we can't invent and create and mobilize and pull together in a much more effective way than we have hitherto, we'll be in trouble," Brown said. "And I did come back here to avoid some troubles, and I think [this pilot] is not the only step, but it is a very significant step in handling this overall global problem that we ignore at our peril."

This is just one of a number of efforts Brown has been involved in to open access and cut costs for students and the state through online education.

An online learning summit last week brought together leaders from the legislature, state government and universities to talk about how online education could help handle higher education's affordability problem.

Separate meetings with the University of California and California State University leaders included online education discussions with Brown.?

And the governor's proposed 2013-14 budget includes $10 million each for the University of California and California State University system to offer more undergraduate courses through technology. In particular, this extra funding would go to classes that have the highest demand and are prerequisite classes for many different degrees.

Android developers invited to take part in 'BlackBerry 10 Last Chance Port-a-thon' this weekend

Android Central

Porting and running Android applications on BlackBerry hardware is nothing new. Since the inclusion of an Android App Player in PlayBook OS 2.0, Android developers have had an additional outlet to which they can distribute their creations with minimal time and effort. Indeed, we first got our Android eye on things a little under a year ago at BlackBerry Devcon Europe.

Things in the BlackBerry camp are starting to kick up through the gears of late -- they're having some kind of launch, if you hadn't heard -- and the final push to have apps on BlackBerry 10 at launch is upon us. Having held 2 previous "port-a-thons," the folks at RIM reached out to us with word of the final app-porting event before the big launch. All kinds of app developers are invited to take part, including of course Android developers.

There's cash up for grabs for those taking part too, with no need to wait until users start buying your BlackBerry 10 apps after launch. Each approved app will net the developer a cool $100, up to a maximum of 20 apps. So, if you've a whole portfolio of Android apps to port across, by our math that's a cool $2000 you could make this weekend. Not bad. Not to mention the repeated promises of success for app vendors on the BlackBerry platform.

Additionally, everyone who submits 5 or more approved apps will be entered into a random draw to stand a chance at receiving one of 250 limited edition BlackBerry 10 devices. One entry is received for the first 5 apps, with an additional entry for each subsequent approved app.

To register for the "BlackBerry 10 Last Chance Port-a-thon" hit up the link below where you'll find everything you need to know. There's a few steps to take ahead of time, such as requesting signing keys and register as a vendor for BlackBerry World.

BlackBerry 10 will launch to the world on Jan. 30. Our sister site, Crackberry, is all over it as only they can -- to the point they have a launch campaign headquarters -- so you're going to want to keep it locked there in the coming weeks.

President Obama promised yesterday that long-awaited regulations requiring insurance companies to provide mental health care coverage are due soon. The rules, required by the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act, prohibit insurance companies from charging higher deductibles for mental health services than they charge for physical health. President Obama did not announce a specific date when the rules will be finished, and they are already past their original due date: http://www.medpagetoday.com/Psychiatry/GeneralPsychiatry/36883

Interior Secretary Ken Salazar leaving Cabinet

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Interior Secretary Ken Salazar, who oversaw a moratorium on offshore drilling after the BP oil spill and promoted alternative energy sources throughout the nation, will step down in March.

Salazar, a former Colorado senator, has run the Interior Department throughout President Barack Obama's first term and pushed renewable power such as solar and wind and the settlement of a longstanding dispute with American Indians.

In a statement, Obama said Salazar had helped "usher in a new era of conservation for our nation's land, water and wildlife" and had played a major role in efforts to "expand responsible development of our nation's domestic energy resources."

Salazar said in a statement that the Interior Department was helping secure "a new energy frontier" and cited an aggressive agenda to reform oil and gas leases, which he said had increased offshore drilling safety.

Under his watch, the Interior Department has authorized nearly three dozen solar, wind and geothermal energy projects on public lands that provide enough electricity to power more than 3 million homes, Salazar said.

Washington Gov. Chris Gregoire, a longtime Obama ally, is among those mentioned as a potential successor to Salazar, along with John Berry, director of the White House Office of Personnel Management. Berry is a former assistant Interior secretary and director of the National Zoo. Gregoire, whose term expires Wednesday, also is considered a candidate to replace Lisa Jackson at the Environmental Protection Agency.

Salazar, 57, entered the Senate with Obama in 2005. At Interior, he gained the most attention for his role in the drilling moratorium, a key part of the administration's response to the April 2010 explosion of the Deepwater Horizon rig in the Gulf of Mexico. It was one of the largest environmental disasters in U.S. history and led to the unprecedented shutdown of offshore drilling.

Business groups and Gulf Coast political leaders said the shutdown crippled the oil and gas industry and cost thousands of jobs, even aboard rigs not operated by BP PLC.

But Salazar said the industry-wide moratorium was the correct call and that his ultimate goal was to allow deepwater operations to resume safely. He acknowledged that the drilling ban caused hardship, but he said his job was to protect the public and the environment even as the administration tried to boost domestic energy production.

The moratorium was lifted in October 2010, although offshore drilling operations did not begin for several more months. Some Gulf Coast lawmakers continue to complain about the slow pace of drilling permits under the Interior Department, which renamed and revamped the agency that oversees offshore drilling in the wake of the spill.

Salazar also approved the nation's first offshore wind farm, Cape Wind, off the Massachusetts coast.

On land, Salazar has promoted solar power in the West and Southwest, approving an unprecedented number of projects, even as oil and gas continue to be approved on federal land.

Salazar also oversaw the settlement of a multibillion dispute with Native American tribes that had lingered for more than a decade.

Throughout his tenure, Salazar tangled with oil companies.

"We don't believe we ought to be drilling anywhere and everywhere," Salazar said in 2010, before the BP spill. "We believe we need a balanced approach and a thoughtful approach" that allows development of oil and gas leases on public lands while also protecting national parks, endangered species and municipal watersheds.

Salazar criticized the Bush administration for what he called a "headlong rush" to lease public lands. Early in his tenure, Salazar suspended 60 of 77 leases in Utah that had been approved by the Bush administration.

"In the prior administration the oil and gas industry were the kings of the world. Whatever they wanted to happen, happened," Salazar said in January 2010, adding that those days were over.

Salazar is the latest Cabinet secretary to leave the administration and the second Hispanic Cabinet member to depart as Obama begins a second term. Labor Secretary Hilda Solis said announced her departure last week.

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, Pentagon chief Leon Panetta, Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner and EPA's Jackson also have announced plans to leave. Energy Secretary Steven Chu is widely expected to leave, though his departure has not been announced.

Sony VP teases 'a big secret' announcement for E3 or earlier, calls out PlayStation brand

Sony VP teases 'a big secret' announcement for May or earlier, calls out PlayStation brand

Sony's been mum on any new PlayStation (read: PlayStation 4) news since ... well, ever (okay, there is that one exception). But Sony Electronics VP of Home Entertainment Hiroshi Sakamoto may be the first to break that silence. He told Emol (translated by Engadget Spanish) in response to a question about "a new announcement related to the new PlayStation," that while the news is "still a big secret," the PlayStation side of Sony, "are getting ready for it." He of course doesn't directly refer to a "PlayStation 4" or the rumored "Orbis" internal project name. Sakamoto adds that the PlayStation team are "focused on E3," but, "the announcement could take place at that time, or maybe even before, in May." Sounds like Sony's toying with a pre-E3 event for its next-gen console -- E3 takes place on June 11 - 13 -- though Mr. Sakamoto's comments are still ambiguous enough that we can't be sure. This is a company that launched three different major hardware iterations of the PlayStation 3, so anything could happen.

When the interviewer follows up on Sakamoto's tease-y answer by asking, "But are you getting ready for a big anoucement or something complementary?," Sakamoto continues speaking in ambiguities. "Probably the former, on that date we hope to deliver big news, but we must wait until May at least," he says. We've followed up with Sony for more, but don't expect to hear much beyond a wink and a smile.

Study: Per Se Drugged Driving Laws Have Little Or No ... - Legal Buds

cded2 arrested Study: Per Se Drugged Driving Laws Have Little Or No Impact On Traffic DeathsThe imposition of so-called per se drugged driving laws, which create new traffic safety violations for drivers who operate a vehicle with the presence of trace amounts of certain controlled substances and/or their inert metabolites (byproducts) in their blood or urine, do not reduce incidences of traffic safety deaths.

That?s the conclusion of a just-published study by economists at the University of Colorado, Denver and Montana State University. The study is available from the Institute for the Study of Labor (IZA) in Germany as a Discussion Paper.

Since 1990, 11 states have passed so-called zero-tolerant per se drugged driving laws which make it illegal for one to drive with detectable levels of a controlled substance in his or her system. Five additional states have passed similar laws specifying non-zero limits for controlled substances or their metabolites. Fourteen (Arizona, Delaware, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Nevada, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Utah, Washington, and Wisconsin) of these sixteen states impose these strict liability per se standards for cannabis. Recently, the White House Office of National Drug Control has recommended zero tolerant per se drug standards for all US states.

Using state-level data from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) for the period 1990-2010, authors examined the relationship between the adoption of controlled substance per se thresholds and overall incidences of traffic fatalities. They found that the relationship is statistically indistinguishable from zero and concluded that there is no evidence that these limits reduced traffic deaths.

Authors reported: ?Despite the fact that these laws have been touted by politicians and academics as an effective strategy for making our roadways safer, we find no evidence that they reduce traffic fatalities. ? [W]e cannot determine why per se drugged driving laws do not work, and leave this issue to future researchers. However, our results clearly indicate that, as currently implemented, laws that make it illegal to drive with detectable levels of a controlled substance in the system have little to no effect on traffic fatalities.?

In November, Washington state voters approved Initiative 502, which legalizes the private use and retail sale of cannabis to adults, but also imposes a 5ng/ml THC/blood per se limit for drivers over the age of 21. In Colorado, where voters on Election Day similarly legalized cannabis, Democrat Gov. John Hickenlooper and Republican Senator Steven King are calling for the passage of nearly identical per se cannabis legislation.

NORML has consistently opposed the imposition of stand-alone per se limits for cannabinoids, arguing that the presence of THC in blood, particularly at lower levels, is an inconsistent predictor of behavioral impairment, particularly in more frequent consumers who may potentially test positive for trace, residual THC levels in their blood for periods of time exceeding any period of acute impairment.

Operation of a motor vehicle while under the influence of cannabis is already a criminal offense in all 50 states. However, in order for one to gain a criminal conviction under most state DUI laws, prosecutors must prove that a motorist recently ingested cannabis and that doing so prohibited him or her from driving safely.

Full text of the study, ?Per Se Drugged Driving Laws and Traffic Fatalities,? is available online here. A separate paper previously published by the same authors reported that the passage of statewide medical marijuana laws is associated with decreased incidences of traffic fatalities.

(AP) ? For most of the first half of the season, the Washington Wizards consistently lost. They're suddenly unbeatable, having won three straight.

Emeka Okafor had 19 points and 11 rebounds, leading six players in double figures as Washington cruised to its easiest win of the season, 120-91 victory over the Orlando Magic on Monday night.

"That was a beautiful thing tonight," Wizards coach Randy Wittman said. "This has been building."

The Wizards were just 4-28 before their streak, but beat Oklahoma City, Atlanta and now Orlando ? all at home ? to nearly double their wins total. Washington leaves Tuesday on a five-game, eight-day road trip while the nation's capital will be consumed by Inauguration ceremonies.

John Wall had 12 points and six assists in 20 minutes in his second game of the season after missing the Wizards' first 33 with a left knee injury.

With Wall back, things are moving a lot quicker on the court.

"It just came out of nowhere ? how fast we're playing now. With John back, the speed is so much faster," Bradley Beal said.

Washington shot a season-best 56.1 percent, scored its most points and had its most assists. Emeka Okafor had 19 points and 11 rebounds, A.J. Price and Kevin Seraphin had 18, Beal scored 17, and Jan Vesely matched his season high with 10.

"These games have not been flukes, we've just been playing very well," Price said. "We lost so many close games that I think once we started losing so many in a row, it became a mental thing. When we got to the fourth quarter, it became a mental thing. We just couldn't execute."

For the time being, Wall's minutes are limited.

"He brings the added dimension that nobody has," Wittman said. "Guys have to run harder."

For the first part of the season, Wall had to watch, painfully.

"We just didn't have nobody to close the fourth quarters," Wall said.

Jameer Nelson had 19 points and 12 assists to lead Orlando, and Nikola Vucevic added 13 points and 13 rebounds. Arron Afflalo, who had 30 points against the Clippers, missed 10 of 11 from the field and finished with two points.

"We just, we got completely outplayed tonight in every aspect of the game. Just didn't have it tonight," J.J. Redick said.

Orlando hoped it would be bolstered by the return of Glen Davis and E'Twaun Moore, who were both hurt in games against Washington. Davis, who had 13 points, sprained his right shoulder in the Magic's win over the Wizards on Dec. 19. Orlando then lost 10 straight before winning on Saturday at the Los Angeles Clippers. In the fourth loss in that stretch ? to Washington ? Moore sprained his right elbow.

The Wizards led the entire game. They were ahead 28-22 after one and outscored the Magic 31-18 to take a 59-40 lead with 1:52 to play in the first half.

"We talked about that before the game ? just what Wall does, and how he creates tempo, and everyone else is able to feed off that. And I think at half it was 19-1 transition points. That's tough to overcome," Magic coach Jacque Vaughn said.

Vesely scored eight quick points. Entering the game, he had just three more points (68) this season than he had fouls (65).

Orlando ended the period on a 13-0 tear with Nelson scoring eight straight on two 3-pointers and a jumper. He passed to Josh McRoberts for a dunk to end the half, pulling the Magic to 59-53.

"We let it slip away," Wittman said. He told his team at halftime: "Now, we've got to win the game again."

They did.

In the third quarter, Washington scored 37 points ? more than the Wizards had in any quarter this season ? to lead 96-77.

"I didn't see the glazed over, 'here we go again' (look)," a relieved Wittman said.

NOTES: Magic F Hedo Turkoglu did not play for the third straight game. He scored just one point in 37 minutes in his three previous games. ... Washington F Trevor Booker, who returned Saturday after missing 22 games with a strained right knee, was out with a sprained right ankle. G Jordan Crawford (left ankle) missed his third straight game. ... Beal was presented with the Eastern Conference Rookie of the Month award for December.

RIM says 15,000 BlackBerry 10 apps submitted in under two days

MELBOURNE, Jan 12 (Reuters) - Li Na's Melbourne Park nemesis Kim Clijsters no longer stalks the Australian Open draw but her absence is no cause for celebration, according to the Chinese sixth seed. If anyone should be popping champagne corks in the non attendance of the retired Belgian, it should be 30-year-old Li, Asia's first grand slam singles champion. Teak-tough Clijsters denied Li her maiden major title in 2011's tense final at Rod Laver Arena, overhauling the Chinese in three sets to win her fourth and final grand slam. ...

Why Twitter and Facebook are stockpickers' friends

However, the company's own Twitter hedge fund was liquidated after just a month, and other similar ventures have also been short-lived. The fund made a 1.85pc return in its first and only month of trading. California-based MarketPsy Capital launched a fund trading on signals from interpreting social media and corporate speeches, but this was also closed.

Despite the closure of the DCM fund, which was mainly down to the tough trading environment, companies are racing to harness the information put out by social media ? which typically gives a time advantage to financial traders. For example, Twitter put out the news of Osama bin Laden's death 20 minutes before traditional news outlets.

A social media start-up called Knowsis, launched last year, aims to give traders access to social media information. The company claims to use algorithms to amalgamate financially relevant social conversation into useful information for traders.

"Social media is an incredibly powerful platform and the finance world has taken notice. However, from a finance perspective it has its problems," said Oli Freeling-Wilkinson, Knowsis's founder. "It's unstructured, noisy and incredibly hard to keep track of the multiple streams out there. As a consequence, it is extremely difficult to extract value from it efficiently." He said this type of data would "only become more embedded as the next generation of traders and investors rise up through the ranks".

Other companies selling similar data include Dataminr, which provides similar information to companies and governments, and Sntmnt, a Dutch company that claims to reach accuracy levels of 62pc when predicting stock market movements using social media.

While these start-ups allow corporate entities to have access to social media sentiment, the DCM platform promises to offer it to ordinary investors. It promises to give a score of between one and 100 to a stock, portfolio or sector, based on social media sentiment.

"For the very first time we are connecting this information source to the trading community, opening up the universe of social media data so traders can make more informed buying and selling decisions," Mr Hawtin said. "The big benefit is that our sentiment rating adds another risk mitigation dimension to trading. For instance, if users see a downward movement in the sentiment rating of a stock in which they are perhaps slightly overweight, they can immediately hedge their position."

Academics have produced research that purports to prove that Twitter trends can predict stock market movements. Johan Bollen of Indiana University found that collective mood swings on Twitter could help predict movements in the US stock market.

He measured seven different types of mood and found that spikes in anxiety on Twitter were followed around three days later in dips in share prices. Mr Bollen then licensed the algorithm he used to DCM.

However, the company has now produced its own algorithm rather than using the licensed one.

Real estate gains ground | Hernando Today

By MICHAEL D. BATES | Hernando Today

The housing picture brightened considerably last year, thanks to one of the lowest home inventories in years for single-family homes and increased investor activity.

The number of existing single-family home sales for 2012 was 2,787, up from 2,582 a year ago, according to statistics from the Hernando County Association of Realtors' multi-listing service.

The average sales price was $96,000, up slightly from $95,000. Average days on the market remained the same at 108.

"We're taking a turn in the right direction," said Marisa Brewer, broker with Preferred Property Associates.

Brewer said she would like to see the average sales price go up more. Home prices peaked in 2006 when the average single-family home sold for $204,000. Prices have declined every year since.

"Hopefully we have hit bottom and started to stabilize," Brewer said. "Depending on the economy, we can start to see some appreciation again. There are still buyers out there ? cash buyers."

If a home is priced correctly in this market, it should sell, she said.

"It's affordable to live in Hernando County again," Brewer said.

Further breaking out the home sales for 2012:

  • 607 sales (or about 22 percent) were foreclosures.
  • 352 sales (about 13 percent) were short sales.
  • 1,829 of the sales (about 65 percent) were traditional transactions.

Brewer said rental prices are also on the rise, another positive sign.

"It's not real easy for investors to flip a home and make an instant profit," Brewer said. "But if they hold on and rent it out, there's positive cash flow there."

Meanwhile, with 11 months of data reported, 2012 will go down as a record year for favorable housing affordability conditions, and a great year for buyers who could get a mortgage, according to the National Association of Realtors.

The NAR cited its Housing Affordability Index, which is based on the relationship between median home price, median family income and average mortgage interest rate.

The higher the index, the greater the household purchasing power.

For all of 2012, NAR projects the housing affordability index to be a record high 194, up from 186 in 2011 ? the previous record.

"Although 2012 (had the strongest affordability) on record, excessively tight underwriting precluded many would-be homebuyers from locking in generational low interest rates," NAR chief economist Lawrence Yun said in a press release. "Rising home prices and a gradual uptrend in mortgage interest rates will offset improvements in family income, but 2013 likely will be the third-best on record in terms of household buying power."

On the new-home construction front, there were 122 single-family home permits issued by the county from Jan. 1, 2012 through September 2012. That compares to 124 for all of 2011, and a far cry from a high of 4,185 in 2005, the last big boom year for construction.

Hoping to jump-start sales, county commissioners this week voted unanimously to extend the suspension of impact fees until Aug. 14 of this year.

The ordinance creating the suspension was set to expire in May, but the board decided to extend it another three months.

Builder Robert Eaton told board members Tuesday he supported the extension.

"Our industry has been devastated, as we all know, as has the real estate industry in general," Eaton said. "Trying to build it back, it has been helpful to have the suspension of impact fees. It has made a difference."

Foot soldiers of the immune system

Jan. 13, 2013 ? Researchers at McGill University and the Research Center for Molecular Medicine (CeMM) of the Austrian Academy of Sciences have discovered the molecular blueprint behind the IFIT protein. This key protein enables the human immune system to detect viruses and prevent infection by acting as foot soldiers guarding the body against infection. They recognize foreign viral ribonucleic acid (RNA) produced by the virus and act as defender molecules by potentially latching onto the genome of the virus and preventing it from making copies of itself, blocking infection. The findings are a promising step towards developing new drugs for combatting a wide range of immune system disorders.

The discovery was made by teams led by Bhushan Nagar, a professor in the Department of Biochemistry at McGill's Faculty of Medicine, and Dr. Giulio Superti-Furga at the CeMM. Building on the 2011 CeMM discovery by Dr. Andreas Pichlmair that IFIT proteins unexpectedly interact directly with the viral RNA to inhibit its replication, the group's latest discovery reveals the molecular mechanism behind how IFIT proteins capture only the viral RNA and distinguishes it from normal molecules belonging to the host. Their research will be published on January 13 in the journal Nature.

"Infection by pathogens such as viruses and bacteria are caught by a layer of the immune system that consists of guard-like proteins constantly on the lookout for foreign molecules derived from the pathogen," explains Prof. Nagar. "Once the pathogen is detected, a rapid response by the host cell is elicited, which includes the production of an array of defender molecules that work together to block and remove the infection. The IFIT proteins are key members of these defender molecules."

When a virus enters a cell, it can generate foreign molecules such as RNA with three phosphate groups (triphosphate) exposed at one end, in order to replicate itself. Triphosphorylated RNA is what distinguishes viral RNA from the RNA found in the human host. During this time, the receptors of the innate immune system are usually able to detect the foreign molecules from the virus and turn on signaling cascades in the cell that leads to the switching on of an antiviral program, both within the infected and nearby uninfected cells. Hundreds of different proteins are produced as part of this anti-viral program, which work in concert to resist the viral infection.

In the Nagar lab, McGill graduate student Yazan Abbas used an arsenal of biophysical techniques, most notably X-ray crystallography, to capture the IFIT protein directly in the act of recognizing the foreign RNA. The work shed light on the interaction between IFITs and RNAs. The researchers determined that IFIT proteins have evolved a specific binding pocket, chemically compatible and big enough to fit only the triphoshorylated end of the viral RNA. Human RNA is not able to tightly interact with this pocket, thereby circumventing autoimmune reactions.

"Once the IFIT protein clamps down on the viral RNA, the RNA is then presumably prevented from being used by the virus for its own replication," says Superti-Furga, "Since many viruses, such as influenza and rabies, rely on triphosphate RNA for their lifecycle, these results have widespread implications in understanding how our cells interact with viruses and combat them."

This work could help advance the development of new drugs for combating a wide array of immune system disorders. "Our findings will be useful for the development of novel drugs directed at IFIT proteins, particularly in cases where it is necessary to dampen the immune response, such as inflammation or cancer therapy," says Nagar.

Obama won't support building 'Death Star'

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A "Death Star" won't be a part of the U.S. military's arsenal any time soon.

More than 34,000 people have signed an online petition calling on the Obama administration to build the "Star Wars" inspired super-weapon to spur job growth and bolster national defense.

But in a posting Friday on the White House website, Paul Shawcross, an administration adviser on science and space, says a Death Star would cost too much to build ? an estimated $850 quadrillion ? at a time the White House is working to reduce the federal budget.

Besides, Shawcross says, the Obama administration "does not support blowing up planets."

The U.S., Shawcross points out, is already involved in several out-of-this-world projects, including the International Space Station, which is currently orbiting Earth with a half-dozen astronauts.

App Turns Smartphone Into Smartkey

60-Second Science

An app turns your smartphone into a smartkey by using Near Field Communication, NFC, to send data wirelessly over short distances. Christopher Intagliata reports.

More 60-Second Science

Today lots of office doors open with smartcards, not keys. Just wave your ID, and "open sesame." Now you can do that with some smartphones, using an app called SmartKey. It's based on Near Field Communication, or NFC?a way to send data wirelessly over short distances. Many Android phones already have NFC chips built in.

Here's how SmartKey works. After installing the app, you register with a central server. In a hotel, that would be run by the front desk. They'd verify your smartphone as an authorized guest, and send you an encrypted key?valid only for the length of your stay. Then, wave your phone over your room's lock. In just half a second, the lock verifies the key's authenticity and that the key is stored on your phone, not a thief's.

Want to let a friend in? Ask the app to issue a new key linked to your friend's phone?and just text or email it. The researchers are presenting SmartKey in March at the CeBIT trade fair in Germany. [Alexandra Dmitrienko et al,??SmartTokens: Delegable Access Control with NFC-enabled Smartphones]

Researchers say SmartKey could be used for offices, homes or Zipcar. Just make sure to keep your phone under lock and key.
