3 Upper-Body Moves For Strapless Dress Season! | Health X Pert ...

We are pumped to share one of our favorite stories from Self here on FitSugar! Summer is all about showing skin, but are you ready to flaunt your figure in a strapless dress? If the answer isn?t quite yes, then you?re in luck! Scoring a sexy back, decolletage, and shoulders doesn?t necessarily mean logging long hours at the gym. Instead, try this no-equipment upper-body workout from Philippe Til, a personal trainer and kettlebell expert based in West Los Angeles. ?A little definition goes a long way in looking great and getting compliments,? he says. ?Working the shoulders and upper back also automatically recruits your biceps and triceps so you kill a few birds with one stone!? Toning up top also creates the illusion you?ve morphed into a long-legged goddess without breaking the bank on a pair of Jimmy Choo stilettos. ?An upright posture automatically helps you draw in your stomach so you appear taller and leaner,? says Til. ?It?s a win-win!? To help his female clients shape up fast for strapless dress season, Til uses circuit training to target several major muscle groups at once. ?Spot reduction doesn?t work,? he says. ?Think of an ice cube. If placed in the sun, it melts all over, not just in one area.? Incorporate these three moves into your regular routine three times a week, repeating four times the first day, three times the second day, and five times the third day. ?Do these exercises back to back,? says Til. ?This workout has a variety of moves that target the upper back and core at once as well as the lower body and core at once. The more muscles you recruit, the more calories you burn and the more time you save!? Keep reading for the back-defining exercises.

Chatbot Eugene Wins Biggest Turing Test Ever

An anonymous reader writes "Eugene Goostman, a chatbot imbued with the personality of a 13-year-old boy, won the biggest Turing test ever staged on 23 June, the 100th anniversary of the birth of Alan Turing. Held at Bletchley Park near Milton Keynes, UK, where Turing cracked the Nazi Enigma code during World War 2, the test involved over 150 separate conversations, 30 judges, 25 hidden humans and five elite, chattering software programs. 'Thirteen years old is not too old to know everything and not too young to know nothing,' explains Eugene's creator, Vladimir Veselov."

Scientists find easier way to make new drug compounds

Wednesday, June 27, 2012

Scientists at The Scripps Research Institute have developed a powerful new technique for manipulating the building-block molecules of organic chemistry. The technique enables chemists to add new functional molecules to previously hard-to-reach positions on existing compounds?making it easier for them to generate new drugs and other organic chemicals.

"This is a basic tool for making novel chemical compounds, and it should have a wide range of applications," said Jin-Quan Yu, PhD, a professor at Scripps Research and senior author of the new report, published in the June 28, 2012 issue of the journal Nature. The co-lead authors are Dasheng Leow, PhD, a former Yu lab member who is now a researcher at the A*Star Institute of Bioengineering and Nanotechnology in Singapore, and Gang Li, PhD, a postdoctoral fellow in the Yu laboratory.

"Controlled selectivity and reaction efficiency are important goals in synthetic chemistry methods for discovering and manufacturing therapeutic and diagnostic agents," said Robert Lees, PhD, who oversees chemical synthesis grants at the National Institutes of Health's National Institute of General Medical Sciences, which partially supported the work. "Professor Yu's work is an exciting example of progress toward those goals, and his novel methods are likely to find broad utility in pharmaceutical research."

The new advance is a method for "CH activation"?chemists' code for the removal of a simple hydrogen atom from the carbon backbone of an organic molecule, and the replacement of that hydrogen atom with a functional chemical group. Compared to the traditional method, in which chemists modify only the existing functional groups on a compound, CH activation more directly boosts the complexity of a compound, giving it potentially valuable new properties.

Overcoming Technical Obstacles

Over the past decade, Yu has helped to pioneer the development of versatile CH-activation techniques. But the use of these techniques has been limited by important technical obstacles. For example, some strategies employ a specially designed molecule that contains the bond-cracking metal palladium; it can attach to an existing functional group on a chemical at an angle that puts the palladium in position to sever a particular CH bond nearby?enabling the attachment of a new functional group at that site. So far, such activation techniques have been useful only against CH bonds that are close to a functional group and that occupy the most accessible relative position (the ortho position) on an aromatic hydrocarbon's carbon-ring backbone.

"But what if a CH bond is in the middle of a desert, so to speak?far from the nearest functional group?" said Yu. "And what if it is also on the hard-to-access meta position, facing away from the nearest functional group in terms of geometry? How do you reach out so far and then around, to cut it?"

In the new study, Yu and his team showed just how to do this with a chemical structure that can deliver bond-breaking palladium to a relatively remote CH site, more than a dozen bonds distant from the nearest functional group. The lengthy, modifiable structure includes a nitrile (a carbon-nitrogen group) and has a flexibility that allows it to act like a crane swinging a wrecking ball. "It brings the palladium out and around to the CH bond at the meta position, and it has the right length and angle so that it will not touch any other positions," said Li.

"It overwhelms the intrinsic preference for other usually more reactive and accessible CH bonds," said Leow.

'Just a Small Sample of the Possibilities'

The team used the technique to quickly modify a variety of compounds, including the amino acid phenylalanine and the neurotransmitter-mimicking drug baclofen. "These are from compound classes that chemists use routinely to synthesize new candidate drugs and other useful chemicals," Yu said. "And they represent just a small sample of the possibilities; we think that we can apply our technique to many compound classes and functional groups."

Yu has now established a collaboration with the pharma giant Bristol Myers Squibb to exploit the new technique in drug development and manufacturing. "The new method will certainly be adopted by pharmaceutical chemists, but I expect that polymer chemists, materials chemists, and others will find it useful too," he said.

iRobot Roomba 790 with Wireless Command Center hands-on (video)

What to get the homeowner who has everything? Perhaps a robotic vacuum styled in the fashion of an RC toy will fit the bill. Here at a GDGT event in New York City we happened upon iRobot's Roomba 790, which comes with a touchscreen remote for manually controlling where the bot goes. The controller -- make that the "Wireless Command Center" -- has an interface matching the one on the 790 itself, so there's no second set of menus to master here. In addition to deciding where it moves, you can also schedule daily cleanings or tap a "Clean" button to push the robot into action.Though this isn't the first time iRobot's dabbled in remote-controlled vacuum cleaners, all previous models relied on infrared sensors, meaning you could only control the Roomba if it was in your line of sight. This guy, though, uses a proprietary technology that allows you to program that 4pm scrubbing from up to 25 meters away.

As for battery life, it runs on four AA cells, and is rated for three to six months of runtime, depending on how compulsively you plan on cleaning. Interestingly, despite the change in wireless standards, the 790 is compatible with older 700-series Roombas, though it's not as is the controller would be sold separately. If you happen to be the kind of fabulously wealthy family who can afford (and has a need) for multiple Roomba cleaners, you can only pair the remote with one robot at a time anyway. Don't have the budget for a $700 robotic vacuum kit? We've got hands-on photos below and a demo video after the break.

98% The Island President

In the simultaneously inspiring and harrowing documentary "The Island President," Mohamed Nasheed was elected to the presidency of the Maldives, a 2000 island archipelago nation in the Indian Ocean, bringing an end to a thirty-year repressive dictatorship in 2008. But a new struggle presents itself in global warming. Currently, the effects there can be seen in erosion and the groundwater. All of which could lead to a unique culture and nation being literally wiped from the map, and its country's population turned into 'environmental refugees.' So, instead of spending valuable resources on health care and education, he has to go with sea walls and other protective measures. So, through this example, we get a disturbing look at what all of our futures may be like if we do not change our ways very soon.(With the use of some great shots, the Maldvies do seem like something out of speculative fiction.) If our behavior affects all others across the globe, then why can't the butterfly flap its wings in the opposite direction, which is where Nasheed comes in, not only in speaking across the world(I'm not recommending invoking World War II usually in speehces, but if you have to, mention Czechoslovakia), but also in proposing to make his country entirely carbon neutral in 10 years by relying on renewable energy sources like solar and wind, making the Maldives an example for the rest of the world. This is harder than it sounds with the economic interests of countries like China and India making things especially difficult with a memorable climax at the climate conference at Copenhagen in 2009. But sadly, Nasheed did not have that much time as he was ousted in a threatened coup in February of this year.

Children's Health & Fitness ? The Answer To Childhood Obesity ...

June 25th, 2012 by Len Saunders

From AOL Patch?..

Childhood obesity is in the news again. The California Center for Public Health Advocacy, in partnership with UCLA, recently released its report: Overweight and Obesity among Children by California City. Turns out 38% of the children in our state are significantly overweight. And that means we?ll be hearing yet again about all the things we should be doing to solve this epidemic.

If we don?t watch out, we may get misguided ideas like the one Daddy Warbuck s Bloomberg is advocating to combating obesity: tax super-sized soft drinks. Seems kind of like shooting fish in a barrel if you ask me, but then again I am not expert on issues of weight, health, and nutrition. Wait, maybe I am.

You see, I?m a mother and that means I am the food and exercise gate-keeper in my family. What I buy, what I cook, how I eat, what I feed my children, what I do for exercise, and what I expect my children to do for exercise makes me the household expert. And it is this very expertise that is being ignored in the conversation about childhood obesity.

MapMyRide+ (for iPhone)

Most tech-connected bicycle nerds have heard of the iPhone app MapMyRide+ ($2.99; limited free version also available), made by the same company that developed the equally well-known MapMyRun. Both apps track your route via GPS while you run or cycle, and show you on a map where you went when you're done. It also displays length, in both time and distance, as well as pace, maximum speed, and a few other statistics.

Although MapMyRide is a solid companion for cyclists?not to mention an excellent tool for new cyclists in particular?it doesn't have quite the same appeal as the slightly more sophisticated Cyclemeter (for iPhone) ($4.99, 4 stars). Both apps are very good, deserving of equal product-rating scores, but Cyclemeter is our Editors' Choice because everything you need to use it is built in. MapMyRide+, on the other hand, puts some of your data onto the Web, preventing you from accessing it via the iPhone, and a few features are only available with an account upgrade, which costs extra. With Cyclemeter, you get the whole kit and caboodle for five bucks. In my testing, the apps functioned equally well. If you don't mind using the Web to access some of your stats and have no need for the Pro features, then download MapMyRide+ for $3.

Features
Sign up for a free MapMyFitness account before you install MapMyRide+, just to make the setup quicker. When you launch the app, you can sign in, and your rides will sync to your Web account from here on out.

When you're ready to ride, just launch the app and go. Like most cycling apps, MapMyRide+ works best when it's visible and accessible?locked into an iPhone bike mount, that is. MapMyRide+ has one great feature, not found in Cyclemeter, for cyclists who keep their phone in their pocket or bag: time delay. Let's say that before you hit the pavement, you suit up in your bike gear and stash your phone securely away? and then have to lock the door and descend a flight of stairs before you put your feet on the pedals. The time delay feature gives you additional seconds or minutes, as much as you set, to get ready to ride. The iPhone vibrates when the countdown ends. Serious cyclists likely have a mount on their handlebars and won't need this feature, but for beginners, it's a boon.

The main display of the MapMyRide+ app shows the mapped route as collected by GPS data, average and current speed, average and current pace, and total ride time. It has everything you'd expect. I prefer Cyclemeter's display a little more because the numbers are larger and easier to read. On MapMyRide+, some of the digits are too small to see while cycling.

After you finish a ride, a summary shows duration, calories burned (if you have entered your height, weight, age, and sex), average speed and pace, and maximum speed and pace.

Splits (that is, splitting your ride into segments, wherein each segment contains its own stats that you can compare with the others) are supported, and you can set the split distance to any interval you choose. When I set up my splits to show 1.5 mile intervals, however, the data never showed up anywhere. Cyclemeter, meanwhile, automatically calculates splits, but only for five-mile stretches.

Maps
MapMyRide+, as well as other apps from MapMyFitness, has a strong social bent. The app encourages sharing, like posting a completed ride to Facebook, as well as connecting with friends to compete with them for best times. Cyclemeter contains sharing and social interaction, too.

Another interesting social feature in MapMyRide is the ability to look for routes that other users in your geographic area have ridden. This feature has a lot of potential value, but it largely depends on your area and how many other users are in it. The straight shot from the Bronx to midtown Manhattan via Sixth Avenue didn't exactly convince me that every route's a winner.

Audio, Music, and More
As with Cyclemeter, MapMyRide+ contains audio feedback, like mile markers or a cue that you're moving too slow, which you can tailor.

Accessing playlists, or setting one up on the spot, is simple. MapMyRide+ gives you a quick access button to your music selection. Cyclemeter puts it in a window that you can swipe to in a second. Both options make it easy to change the soundtrack.

While MapMyRide+ also includes a food logging component right in the app, which Cyclemeter does not, it's not one I would use. The idea is that you can count calories in as well as burned, but the system just isn't thorough. For example, you can enter food values of whole integers only (I ate half a banana with my breakfast and felt really frustrated at not being able to enter the correct intake). Simply put, the calorie feature is nowhere near as useful as dedicated calorie-counting apps, like MyFitnessPal and Lose It!

The Cyclemeter app has a few bonus features that you won't find in MapMyRide+. One is a calendar that shows with icons whether you completed a ride that day and if it was better or worse than your typical times for that particular route. Another is a complete summary by day, week, month, year, or all time that shows tallies, averages, and your other stats. MapMyRide+ only shows your ten most recent rides in the app. Through the Web account, you can see a little more information, but it's not tallied. To get unlimited access to all your routes, you need to buy at least a "Bronze Pro" membership (from $5.99 per month). Other content for Pro eyes only includes advanced training plans (e.g., training for a race) and a personalized workout calendar. For casual cyclers, the lack of these features in the $2.99 app probably isn't a deal-breaker, but advanced riders should know about the extra cost.

A Solid App, But Experts Can Do Better
For $3, MapMyRide+ is a great app, especially for cyclists who consider themselves beginners or casual at the sport. More advanced riders will almost definitely be happier paying $2 more for Cyclemeter, our Editors' Choice.

Pinterest for Android to be unveiled at Google IO?

Pinterest for Android

Pinterest has been the hot new service of 2012, but we're still lacking an official Pinterest Android application. It looks like that might finally change this week at the Google IO developer conference in San Francisco. Our eagle-eyed pals at Ausdroid spied Pinterest listed in the Sandbox attendees. And, sure enough, in the description line it says "Now available for Android." You can't actually download it yet, but that's a pretty good sign that we should see Pinterest for Android this week.

And don't forget that we'll be at Google IO all week, so bookmark this page for all the updates! Here we go, folks!

Will Microsoft Buy Nokia?

Microsoft held a one-day event Wednesday for developers who want to learn more about Windows Phone 8. This will be the first Microsoft smartphone platform based on Microsoft Windows instead of Windows CE. It is a last-ditch, all-or-nothing effort for both Microsoft and Nokia to get back into the smartphone game. I think we saw enough clues during the event and in related official blog posts to say with some certainty that Microsoft soon will announce it is buying Nokia.

Here's my guess: Microsoft will announce it has bought Nokia--or at least the part that makes phones and developers' mobile software--before the end of 2012, maybe around the time Apple is likely to announce an iPhone 5.

To learn more and to read the entire article at its source, please refer to the following page, Will Microsoft Buy Nokia?- InformationWeek

Turkish, Syrian forces seek downed Turkish jet

ANKARA/BEIRUT (Reuters) - Turkey and Syria said their navies were jointly searching on Saturday for Turkish airmen shot down by Syria over the Mediterranean, while nearby Turkish authorities were hosting thousands of rebels fighting President Bashar al-Assad.

Signals from both sides suggested neither wanted a military confrontation over Friday's shooting down of the jet near sea borders of both states. However, the joint operation will clearly sit uneasily with both forces, given the bitter hostility between the two former allies over Assad's 16-month crackdown on opponents.

Turkey has promised to respond decisively.

"It is not possible to cover over a thing like this. Whatever is necessary will no doubt be done," Turkish President Abdullah Gul told reporters, adding that Ankara had been in telephone contact with Syrian authorities.

The incident, whatever its causes, demonstrated Syria's formidable Russian-supplied air defenses - one of the many reasons for Western qualms about any military intervention to halt bloodshed in the country.

Turkey's Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc said the downed jet was not a warplane but a reconnaissance aircraft, state television TRT reported. Turkish media had earlier identified it as an F-4 Phantom, a fighter also used for reconnaissance

Gul said it was routine for fast-flying jets to cross borders for a short distance and that an investigation would determine if the aircraft was brought down in Turkish airspace.

Syria's military said the Turkish plane was flying low, just one kilometer off the Syrian coast, when it was shot down. It had been tracked at first as an unidentified aircraft and its Turkish origin established subsequently.

"The navies of the two countries have established contact. Syrian naval vessels are participating along with the Turkish side in the search operation for the missing pilots," it said.

With the second biggest army in NATO, a force hardened by nearly 30 years of fighting Kurdish rebels, Turkey would be a formidable foe for a Syrian military already struggling to put down a popular uprising and an increasingly potent insurgency.

"PLAYING WITH FIRE"

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu met Turkey's military commanders and intelligence chief to discuss the search for the pilots and Ankara's next steps.

The meeting followed an emergency security session chaired by Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan on Friday evening.

"Turkey will present its final stance after the incident has been fully brought to light and decisively take the necessary steps," said a statement from Erdogan's office.

Turkish newspapers were less restrained.

"They (the Syrians) will pay the price," said Vatan, while Hurriyet daily said: "He (Assad) is playing with fire."

The joint Syrian-Turkish naval operation was not without its tense ironies. Less than 50 Km (30 miles)away in Turkey's southeastern Hatay province, authorities are giving refuge to the rebel Free Syrian Army who mount daily attacks on Syrian government forces.

Saudi Arabia and Qatar are paying salaries to Syrian rebels, with Turkish involvement, an Arab diplomat in Jeddah said.

"The payment has been going on for months and the agreement was made on April 2 by Saudi Arabia and Qatar, with logistical organization from Turkey where some Free Syrian Army factions are based," he said, asking not to be named.

"The point of this is to encourage as many factions of the Syrian army to defect and to organize the FSA, control it and prevent any extremist organizations from joining it."

A spokesman for Saudi Arabia's foreign ministry said he was not aware of reports that the kingdom was funding Syrian rebels.

The souring of Syrian-Turkish relations has provoked concern among Turks that Syria may revive its former support for Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) insurgents in southeastern Turkey.

"It's possible the Turks were sending jets in the area in response to an apparent escalation of the PKK's activities," Hilal Khashan, political science professor at the American University of Beirut, told Reuters. "Turkey may suspect that Syria and Iran are supporting Kurdish rebel activities now as a reaction to Turkish support of the Syrian revolt."

However, Khashan said he did not expect a harsh military reaction from Turkey. "It is under a tight leash by the United States. They don't want to start a war tomorrow."

BUDDING CIVIL WAR

A civil war, or something closely resembling one, is already in full swing in Syria, where fighting or shelling engulfed parts of the cities of Aleppo, Hama, Homs, Deir al-Zor and Douma, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.

The British-based watchdog also reported fierce clashes and shelling in the town of al-Bab in Aleppo province, where army helicopters were flying overhead. It said rockets and gunfire had killed three people in al-Qusair, a town in Homs province. Two men were killed in an ambush by security forces in Hama.

Syrian army shelling killed at least 28 people in Deir al-Zor, opposition activists said. A hospital source said three women and several children were among civilians killed when shells hit their homes in the Old Airport area.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) said it was still negotiating access to hundreds of trapped civilians and wounded people in Homs after a failed attempt to reach them on Thursday. "We are still in discussions to try to enter the (old) city," ICRC spokesman Jean-Yves Clemenzo said in Geneva.

Turkey fears the fighting, much of which pits majority Sunni Muslim dissidents and rebels against Assad's Alawite-dominated security forces, could unleash a flood of refugees over its own border and ignite a regional sectarian conflict.

It already hosts 32,000 Syrian refugees near the border. The opposition Syrian National Council meets in Istanbul.

Ankara has previously floated the possibility of setting up some kind of safe haven or humanitarian corridor inside Syria, which would entail military intervention, but has said it would undertake no such action without U.N. Security Council approval.

Turkey has said however that Assad must go.

It was unclear why the Syrians had shot down the aircraft, which, having left a base in Malatya, was flying close to a corridor linking Turkey with Turkish forces on Northern Cyprus.

"The Syrian military may have taken a calculated gamble by downing the Turkish plane, which could boost the morale of Assad's loyalists after increased defections from the military," said Yasser Saadeldine, an opposition Syrian commentator.

"A Turkish retaliation would fit into the fantasy he (Assad) is peddling that the uprising is a foreign conspiracy."

It was also possible the air defenses could have mistaken the aircraft for a defecting pilot, following an incident earlier in the week when a Syrian aircraft landed in Jordan.

Russia and China, Assad's strongest backers abroad, firmly oppose any outside interference in the Syrian crisis, including foreign arming or funding of insurgents, saying envoy Kofi Annan's stalled peace plan is the only way forward.

Assad's prime minister, appointed after a parliamentary election conducted last month despite the violence convulsing the country, named a new cabinet on Saturday, retaining the same interior, defense and foreign ministers.

Two months after he shot to national prominence for rescuing neighbors from a fire, the Newark, N.J. mayor showed up at the scene of a car accident where a pedestrian had just been hit ? but it was someone else who did most of the heroics.

?God bless my residents. Pulled up on pedestrian/vehicle accident. We got man stabilized & into ambulance. He?ll b OK. Thanx 2 all who helped,? Booker tweeted Friday afternoon.

Booker told WNBC-TV he helped get water and ice for the victim and comforted the man until an ambulance arrived.

He followed up with a second tweet: ?I appreciate the driver. Man ran into traffic. Driver did the right thing & stayed & helped me & others aid man until medical help arrived.?

According to the New Jersey Star-Ledger, law enforcement authorities said a county detective was actually the first on the scene and rendered most of the aid.

?The detective immediately called 911 and began to render assistance,? said Katherine Carter, a spokeswoman for the Essex County Prosecutor?s office. ?He saw the victim was face down on the ground. He was bleeding from his mouth and nose. Det. [Michael] Davidson got some tissues from his trunk and began to wipe away the blood.?

Carter said Booker showed up ?within minutes,? followed by an ambulance and Newark police.

Eating Disorders Hitting Women Over 50, Study Finds

THURSDAY, June 21 (HealthDay News) -- Although eating disorders are typically thought of as a problem among teenage girls, many women over 50 practice unhealthy eating behaviors, a new study indicates.

The researchers found that almost 4 percent report binge eating, nearly 8 percent report purging, more than 70 percent diet to lose weight and 62 percent say their weight or shape adversely impacts their lives, according to the report published June 21 in the International Journal of Eating Disorders.

"Everyone -- especially health-care providers -- needs to erase stereotypes about who experiences disordered eating. Women well into their 50s and beyond still report struggling with weight dissatisfaction and a palette of unhealthy behaviors aimed at weight control," said lead researcher Cynthia Bulik, director of the University of North Carolina Eating Disorders Program.

"Our '70 is the new 50' society may be placing additional appearance pressures on women that perpetuate disordered eating practices well into older adulthood," she added.

These messages cause dissatisfaction and lead women toward extreme measures to achieve these "societally concocted ideals," Bulik said.

For the study, Bulik's team collected data on more than 1,800 U.S. women who took part in the Gender and Body Image Study.

Among these women, about 27 percent were obese, 29 percent were overweight, 42 percent were normal weight and 2 percent were underweight, the study authors noted.

About 8 percent of women said they purged in the last five years and 3.5 percent said they had binged in the past month, the investigators found. Most of these women were in their early 50s, but there were also women over 75, the authors said.

In addition, 36 percent of the women said they spent at least half their time in the last five years dieting, 41 percent said they checked their body size or shape daily and 40 percent weighed themselves at least twice a week.

Moreover, 62 percent said their weight or shape had a negative impact on their life, 79 percent said it affected their image of themselves and 64 percent said they thought about it daily.

Many women resorted to unhealthy ways to lose weight, including diet pills (7.5 percent), excessive exercise (7 percent), diuretics (2.5 percent), laxatives (2 percent) and vomiting (1 percent), the researchers found.

In all, 66 percent didn't like their overall appearance. Their dissatisfaction was highest with their stomach (84 percent) and shape (73 percent).

"We simply cannot ignore disordered eating and weight dissatisfaction in women over 50," Bulik said.

"But, we have no idea how to tailor interventions for women over 50 so treatment can be appropriate to their developmental stage in life. That is a critical next step," she said.

Eating disorders can have dire consequences, Bulik noted.

"Anorexia nervosa has the highest mortality rate of any psychiatric illness. Although we do not have clear data on differences in mortality across the age spectrum, we do know that the body becomes less resilient to the physical insults from starvation, binge eating and purging as it ages. So these disorders in older women may lead to even more medical complications because the body bounces back less easily as it ages," she said.

Bulik said there are signs to look out for that may indicate someone has an eating disorder. These include: precipitous weight loss or low weight; withdrawing from family, partner and friends; evidence of binge eating or purging; extremely low self-esteem and body esteem; not eating with the family; avoiding events where there is food.

"Partners can be so helpful, but often do not know what to do. Inform yourself about eating disorders and don't expect the problem just to go away. These are not just passing phases, these are serious and potentially life-threatening disorders that require treatment," she said.

Commenting on the study, Dr. Edith Rubenstein, an attending psychiatrist at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City, said: "This is an unrecognized problem. It had been thought the problem was much smaller."

But, she added, "All of these weight and shape concerns are taking up a lot of mental space in women in this age group, surprisingly."

There is a growing older population of women who are heavier, which may be contributing to this anxiety about weight and shape, Rubenstein said. These are serious problems that need attention, she explained.

"If you have excessive concerns about weight and shape, if you are obsessing about weight and shape, if you are engaging in unhealthy behaviors like bingeing and purging, you should seek medical attention," Rubenstein advised.

(AP) ? Random as Grand Slam tournament draws are meant to be, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer keep bumping into each other in major semifinals, and it could happen again at Wimbledon.

The No. 1-seeded Djokovic, the defending champion, and No. 3 Federer ? a six-time winner at the All England Club ? were placed in the same half of this year's field Friday. They've played in the semifinals at five of the past seven Grand Slam tournaments, with Djokovic holding a 4-1 edge, including a victory two weeks ago at the French Open.

Similarly, No. 2 Rafael Nadal and No. 4 Andy Murray are making a habit of major semifinal meetings: Wimbledon could make the fifth time in nine majors they've played at that stage. Nadal is 4-0 against Murray in that stretch, including at the All England Club in 2010 and 2011.

The potential men's quarterfinals at Wimbledon, where play begins Monday, include Djokovic vs. No. 6 Tomas Berdych, the 2010 runner-up; Federer vs. No. 8 Janko Tipsarevic or No. 11 John Isner, the big-serving, 6-foot-9 American best known for beating Nicolas Mahut 70-68 in the fifth set of the longest match in tennis history; two-time champion Nadal vs. No. 5 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga; and Murray vs. No. 7 David Ferrer or No. 9 Juan Martin del Potro.

Isner, it so happens, could wind up with a second-round match against Mahut ? an annual occurrence at the grass-court Grand Slam tournament. After their 11-plus-hour marathon in the first round in 2010, they met again in the first round last year.

The women's quarterfinals set up by Friday's draw are No. 1 Maria Sharapova vs. No. 8 Angelique Kerber; No. 6 Serena Williams, a four-time champion, vs. Petra Kvitova, the defending champion; No. 3 Agnieszka Radwanska or Venus Williams vs. No. 5 Sam Stosur; and No. 2 Victoria Azarenka vs. No. 7 Caroline Wozniacki.

Sharapova and four-time Wimbledon champion Serena Williams could meet only in the final ? which would be a rematch of 2004, when Sharapova won her first major title.

Coming off a French Open championship that completed a career Grand Slam, Sharapova managed to avoid plenty of top players who wound up on the other half of the bracket, including Kvitova, Wozniacki, Julia Goerges, Ana Ivanovic and Marion Bartoli.

Sharapova's toughest early test might come in the second round against 40th-ranked Tsvetana Pironkova of Bulgaria, who upset Venus Williams en route to the semifinals at Wimbledon in 2010, then got to the quarterfinals last year.

Venus Williams, unseeded at Wimbledon for the first time since she made her tournament debut at age 17 in 1997, could face Radwanska in the second round ? a rematch of their second-round meeting at the French Open, won by Radwanska.

Kim Clijsters, also unseeded this year after missing three months with injuries, was drawn to face another former No. 1, Jelena Jankovic, in the first round. Clijsters withdrew from a tuneup event in the Netherlands on Friday because of a stomach muscle strain, but vowed to be at Wimbledon for what she says will be the last time; she announced she'll retire after the U.S. Open in September.

Djokovic, whose 27-match Grand Slam winning streak was snapped by Nadal in the French Open final, will try to begin a new run when he faces former No. 1 Juan Carlos Ferrero on Monday's first match at Centre Court. Ferrero, the 2003 French Open champion, has talked about the possibility of retiring after this season.

Djokovic then could face Ryan Harrison of the U.S. in the second round.

Among the intriguing first-round encounters are Tsonga against 2002 Wimbledon champion Lleyton Hewitt, who needed a wild card to get into the draw after his ranking dipped below 200; 20th-seeded Bernard Tomic, who reached the quarterfinals as an 18-year-old qualifier last year, against David Goffin, a baby-faced 21-year-old who took a set off Federer in the French Open's fourth round this month; and Tipsarevic against 2002 runner-up David Nalbandian, who was disqualified from the final at the Queen's Club warmup event last weekend after kicking an advertising board and injuring a line judge.

Murray, still seeking to become the first British man since 1936 to win a Grand Slam title, faces a tricky path that starts with former top-five player Nikolay Davydenko and could include 6-foot-10 Ivo Karlovic and the big serves of No. 16 Marin Cilic, No. 21 Milos Raonic or No. 32 Kevin Anderson.

Federer, owner of a record 16 Grand Slam titles and a record 237 Grand Slam match wins, has a first-round match against 43rd-ranked Albert Ramos of Spain, a guy making his Wimbledon debut and with a career record of 1-4 at major tournaments.

Pecan Corner: Barbarian Days: A Family Doctor's Home in the ...

A couple of weeks ago, we went to Cross Plains, Texas, and toured the Robert E Howard home as part of their "Barbarian Days Festival".? Howard's father was Dr. Isaac M. Howard. This simple frame house served as the family home, and, also, sometimes, doubled as Dr Howard's office where patients were seen. The home was continually in use as a place to live for various families from the time Dr Howard sold it until Cross Plains' Operation Pride recovered it for preservation in 1989.
?Since that time, they have worked to furnish it with period furnishings and house those artifacts they can obtain (such as the camel inkwell that stood on Howard's desk - a gift from Cecil Lotief, local Cross Plains? dry goods merchant - and first Texas legislator who had been born in Lebanon. He was first elected in 1932). Other furnishings are close copies of items either known to have been there, or true to the period.? Below is a photo of Bob Howard in front of this house, circa 1925.

My main interest was that I enjoy touring simple historical homes: the kind of house in which ordinary citizens lived a hundred years ago. In this case, the home of an ordinary small-town family physician. During that epoch in American history, there were similarities among all Americans of frugality, economy of space and furnishings, and natural closeness of proximity to household members and neighbors, that is readily apparent when we walk through such a home and consider how life would be lived in it.

?By today's standards, the author's cell-like bedroom/study (below) is tiny, cramped, and simple. But by the standards of the day (continuing even up into the 1970s in most of the country), it was probably much like the rooms of Howard's own unmarried peers. The room offered simple comfort, privacy, a bright and airy place in which to write and attend to the voluminous correspondence an author would keep up in that era when postcards and letters would be mailed daily for the same purposes email and messaging would serve today.?

The bare bulb was a common feature of most homes until new homes built in the prosperous 1950s and 60s popularized inexpensive, built-in light fixtures. My grandmother's house had several while I was growing up.? Our current house still had bare bulbs in the mid-1940s during WWII, when Rita's family first moved here, and it was the first time they had electricity. This house at that time had 4 rooms - and her family rented one of them out to a soldier and his wife, who kept all their household goods in that one small bedroom, brought pots out to cook and went back into their room to eat their meals! This gives an idea of how economically indoor space was used during these earlier eras.

?Porches were converted into bedrooms more often than not - and existing windows and doors were just left intact. During pre-electric times, such windows and doors still had use for ventilation and light, just like the transoms found above interior doors in so many old homes. If not needed to carry daylight and breezes, these unused windows and doors were often covered permanently with a heavy curtain or drape to block light and drafts, and furniture would be placed in front of it as though it were a solid wall.

My mother's house, of similar or slightly earlier vintage as this one, has two such converted porches: one very similar to this one resulted in her kitchen having a window-to-nowhere (well, technically, a window-into-the-next-room). Her kitchen also has another window that faces into the remaining screened "sleeping porch" that could have been, if needed, similarly converted. The other converted porch left a door-to-nowhere behind the sofa in her living room (but alas, there is no "door into summer"!).

Not only were bedrooms added to accommodate growing families, but also young adults tended to live at home until they married, and were given their own space by adding a room or converting a porch. Our house has a converted porch that we now use as the laundry room. but which once turned a crowded 4-room house into a three-bedroom home? and housed a family's sons, who had previously slept in the living room.

From the back, it is each to see the flat roof of the addition - also very common for what is known as "lean-to" add-ons. Our house has a similar flat roof over the portion added in the 1970s.
?

?I was particularly interested to see the plate block for Dr. Howard's original bookplate (or Ex Libris as some call them). It is a linoleum cut and bears the doctor's own signature. A corresponding print from it is framed with it, but I couldn't tell whether the plate was designed to make prints onto gummed paper for application, or to print directly onto a book's fore-leaf.
?The docents at the museum, all members of Cross Plains' Project Pride, were wonderful, and I appreciated their friendly guidance through the tour. Here is one of these nice ladies with the Cross Plains Centennial Quilt, displayed in Mr and Mrs Howard's bedroom of the home, to which she had contributed a square. Each block was made by local women to celebrate the town's history, and its recovery from the devastating wild fires that burned 130 homes and killed two people in 2005.
?We wrapped up the day with the Barbarian Festival in a lovely, oak-shaded park, complete with live music, free watermelon (courtesy of AMA-Techtel), Conan the Barbarian artwork, and fabulous food. There was even a car show. This is an annual event and it was a lot of fun. I hope we will be able to go again from time to time!

Much more about Howard, his writing, his family, and life can be found at various places, including REH: Two-Gun Raconteur, REHupa (the Robert E Howard United Press Association), and the Robert E Howard Foundation.

What can a VoIP Phone System Do for a Small Business ...

Voice over Internet Protocol, or VoIP, is a term used to describe the transmission of telephone calls using a data network, rather than through traditional phone lines. It's a simple concept, but is having a significant impact on the world of business communications.

VoIP is itself enabled by a much broader technological evolution, ie the convergence of multiple forms of communication including voice, video and data over a single network. This transformation is creating a revolution in the way communications works, and has the potential to offer significant benefits to your business. VoIP can help your company grow by broadening their communication skills, you can save money on their telecommunications costs, and may allow for greater productivity, mobility and flexibility in their workforce.

Many small businesses around the world are already benefiting from the advantages of VoIP systems, many of which are well suited to this type of organization. Here are some examples of why VoIP is making a big impact on business communications for small businesses:

Or VoIP provides the ability to use an integrated voice and data at a lower cost than the separate parts.

or VoIP communications capabilities provides small business on par with most of the companies.

or VoIP can open the door to new services and applications for small businesses that can drive additional revenue and help cope with the growth in customer demand.

or VoIP can lead to increased employee productivity in giving employees a more flexible means of communication and allowing greater mobility, while increasing the flow of information.

There are different ways for small businesses to take advantage of VoIP. An update to an existing phone system, when available, can allow VoIP communications between different locations without any major disruption to the infrastructure in each office. Moreover, a new VoIP system can be purchased to replace an old phone switch and open up new capabilities. Yet another option is to pay monthly for a service provider to provide a hosted VoIP system, without buying any capital equipment at all.

Small businesses are often good candidates for VoIP systems, and have represented most of the early adopters of technology. While large companies have complex networks, with a multitude of different telephone systems that may be difficult to integrate into a single converged network, networks of small companies are more straightforward, allowing an easier transition to VoIP.

However, some small businesses have found that there are complexities and difficulties that stand in the way of them maximizing the impact of new technology. The lack of good advice, a misconceived plan or deployment of inexperienced personnel can all led to problems.

The keys to a successful transition to a VoIP network based on starting with a clear understanding of the business model behind it and an implementation plan that best fits the overall business objectives.

There are certain circumstances, however, VoIP is likely to have a more significant impact than others. If your business is in one or more of the following situations that tend to get a faster refund:

or expansion and the need for or likely to need larger offices.

or have a significant percentage of employees traveling on business or working full time or part time from home, using laptops.

or making acquisitions and the need to integrate with other business.

or have international offices.

or have an increasing volume of incoming calls.

or have not been replaced or upgraded their telephony infrastructure over the past 5 years.

or have a good penetration of Ethernet cabling and have communications equipment that is less than 3 years old.

or work in an industry with dynamic competition in strong levels of customer service are essential.

In general, systems based on VoIP phone offer great potential for small businesses and can help keep costs under control while growing a successful business.????

Natalee Holloway's mom sues Nat'l Enquirer

The mother of Natalee Holloway is suing The National Enquirer, saying the tabloid published untrue stories to profit from her daughter's 2005 disappearance in Aruba.

Beth Holloway said in the lawsuit filed Wednesday that the magazine and its publisher, American Media Inc., published "false headlines, articles and statements" for nearly seven years.

"They keep on doing it," said Lin Wood, the attorney for Beth Holloway. "We had no choice but to file this lawsuit. This is a mother who has exercised every effort to make sure her daughter is alive."

Natalee Holloway was 18 years old when she vanished during a high school graduation trip to the Caribbean island of Aruba. She was last seen leaving a bar the morning of May 30, 2005 with Joran van der Sloot, a Dutchman who was raised in Aruba.

Holloway's body was never found and the ensuing searches for her would create intense media scrutiny and worldwide attention. In January, a judge declared Holloway dead.

Wood said Beth Holloway hopes her daughter is still alive. But if Natalee Holloway is not, Wood said, the mother believes Van der Sloot is responsible for her daughter's death, saying the "evidence is overwhelming" against him.

Van der Sloot is the prime suspect in Holloway's unsolved disappearance. He faces extortion and wire fraud charges in Alabama in connection with Holloway's unsolved disappearance in Aruba exactly five years before he killed Peruvian college student Stephany Flores after meeting her in a Lima casino.

Van der Sloot pleaded guilty in January in Peru to killing the 21-year-old Flores.

The lawsuit mentions several articles, including one that claims van der Sloot had a "secret hand-drawn" map to Holloway's grave. The lawsuit also claims the magazine knew statements used in stories were false when they were published.

A call to Boca Raton, Fla.-based American Media Inc. was not immediately returned.

"Defendants purposely avoided learning the truth by, among other things, failing to attempt to interview many individuals who could confirm or deny the things stated in the headlines, articles, and statements and captured in the photographs," the lawsuit said.

The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages.

Air Canada embarks on its first biofuelpowered flight from Toronto to Mexico City

Not looking to be left out of the biofuel party, Air Canada is the latest to try out the eco-friendly alternative for its jet engines. An Airbus A319 will make the outfit's pseudo-sustainable flight from Toronto to Mexico City powered by a 50 / 50 mixture of the aforementioned material and regular ol' jet fuel. This particular blend is derived from recycled cooking oil and meets all standards to avoid any modifications to the aircraft's existing systems -- while still offering a 40 percent cut in emissions. In addition to green-powered trips, the airline is implementing several other measures to improve its impact on Mother Nature, including the use of iPads over paper documents for pilots. Here's to hoping that the company will be fueling it's own 787s with the blend in the near future.

[Thanks, Renaud]
