BRIGANTINE, N.J. (AP) ? President Barack Obama, swooping in for a somber look at Sandy's storm-whipped destruction, pledged to the hurting people of New Jersey and beyond on Wednesday that "we are here for you and we will not forget."

Not forgotten, either, were the unspoken political implications of Obama's tour just six days from the election.

Commanding the federal response to the disaster, Obama spent a day doling out hugs, handshakes and promises of military might to help. And he soaked in the praise of one of Republican challenger Mitt Romney's top surrogates, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.

"I cannot thank the president enough for his personal concern and compassion," Christie said with Obama at his side.

During a helicopter tour, a talk with displaced residents and a walk along a battered street, Obama saw Sandy's massive punch.

From high above, Obama viewed flattened houses, flooded neighborhoods, sand-strewn streets and a still-burning fire along the battered New Jersey coastline. Parts of the New Jersey shore's famed boardwalk were missing.

In a community center now serving as a shelter, Obama and Christie worked the room. About 50 people have found comfort there while other residents came in and out for a meal, a hot shower or a chance to power up their cellphones. After press left the shelter, Obama passed out White House-emblazoned boxes of M&Ms to the kids.

And in a waterfront neighborhood in Brigantine, northeast of Atlantic City, Obama and Christie walked a lonely street piled with debris.

He encountered a tearful Donna Vanzant, the owner of the marina.

"It'll be ok," the president said, hugging Vanzant. "Everyone's safe, right? That's the most important thing."

In his most formal comments, Obama sought to project leadership in a crisis, delving deep into the details of the federal response. He spoke of steps taken to position generators and water, and to use military planes and navy ships to move assets.

And he said he ordered his staff to follow a "15 minute rule." He said that meant his staff had to respond to any state or local official who calls within that time frame. "If they need something, we figure out a way to say yes," he said.

The federal government, Obama said, is "here for the long haul."

The president's tour guide was Christie, a rising Republican figure who joined Obama on a Marine One helicopter ride over the region.

Obama was equally effusive about Christie, telling residents that "your governor is working overtime" to repair the damage from the storm.

"The entire country has been watching what's been happening. Everybody knows how hard Jersey has been hit," Obama said.

Even though politics infuse every moment in the final week before Election Day, the White House sought to focus attention on the storm, which has given Obama an opportunity to project bipartisanship and presidential leadership.

White House spokesman Jay Carney said there were no political motivations behind Obama's decision to join his supporter's rival.

"This is not a time for politics," Carney said, the same day Vice President Joe Biden blasted Romney on charges of dishonesty.

As Obama and Christie flew over Point Pleasant Beach, sand and water could be seen covering several blocks of the community. But the president got a reminder of next week's election from someone who wrote "ROMNEY" in large letters in the sand at the north end of the beach.

MILWAUKEE, Wisc. (CNN) ? Rebecca Edmonds grew up a military kid and, like most military families, often moved as her dad rose through the ranks of the Navy.

Enamored with the military and her father?s service to his country, Edmonds decided in high school that military life was calling her.

?I think it?s definitely a tight-knit community, and I was willing to be a part of that,? Edmonds recalled of her decision to join the Reserve Officers? Training Corps, commonly called ROTC, at age 18.

?I think the families are welcomed. I remember going to a base, and we?d be welcomed by these families we didn?t even know. ?

When the Air Force offered her a full scholarship to Marquette University, Edmonds jumped at the chance to become a nurse and serve her country. Marquette is a Catholic university, a perfect fit for the practicing Catholic.

Nothing captured her feeling of community and sense of military pride more than when her equally proud father, Capt. Tony Edmonds, swore in his oldest child as a second lieutenant in the United States Air Force.

?It was very special,? she recalled of her commissioning in July 2011, shortly after college graduation. ?I was so happy that (my parents) had an opportunity to come out and be a part of that ceremony and have him administer the oath of office to me as an active-duty officer.?

Today, her dream of serving her country has been shattered.

Weeks before being commissioned as a military officer, Edmonds discovered that she was pregnant.

That was before she says she learned the Air Force forbid single parents from enlisting. The reason for the policy, according to Air Force officials, is that the demands of deployment and military service put strain on family life and even more so for single parents.

The Air Force accused Edmonds of committing fraud, ejected her from its ranks and revoked her $92,000 scholarship. Her case is currently under review.

Edmonds? mother, Karen, a military wife for 25 years, said deployments are tough on all service members and their families, married or not. If her daughter were to deploy, Karen Edmonds said, her grandson would be well cared for by an extended family that includes the child?s father and both sets of grandparents.

Edmonds? mother said she believes the policy discriminates against single women and encourages pregnant single women to abort their pregnancies.

?The Air Force is making an assumption that single parents cannot provide adequately for their children if deployed,? Edmonds? mother said. ?That?s what burns me up.?

After she was ?dis-enrolled? from the Air Force ? the military term for the separation from service ? Edmonds appealed to the Air Force and her congressman, Rep. Paul Ryan, now the Republican nominee for vice president. The Air Force rejected her initial appeal but said this week that her case is now being reviewed at the highest levels. Edmonds has also hired a military attorney, Daniel Conway.

Edmonds, her family and her attorney claim that the Air Force is encouraging its members to give up their children, through either adoption or abortion, a position they say was revealed in a comment from an Air Force colonel.

In a letter responding to Ryan?s inquiry on Edmonds? case, Col. Kelly L. Goggins?wrote, ?If Ms. Edmonds had reported her pregnancy she would have been placed on medical recheck status until she gave birth. At that time she would have been able to commission if she were not a single parent, for example, if she were married, or had given the child up for adoption.?

CNN has repeatedly asked to interview Goggins, to no avail.

Edmonds said that letter confirms her fear at the time she discovered she was pregnant.

She had just found out that she was expecting when she had what would be one of her final counseling sessions with an officer, as required by the Air Force ROTC.

?He just says, ?I don?t know what would happen to a cadet if she were to become pregnant. But I don?t think it would be good. So just don?t get pregnant,? ? Edmonds recalled of the conversation with the officer. ?He said that word for word to me. At that point, I thought, ?OK, I don?t think I have to tell anybody this. I?m scared now.? ?

Edmonds completed all her physical and academic requirements, telling only her boyfriend and her family of her pregnancy. Abortion was never an option, she said, because of her Catholic faith and her personal beliefs.

Thirteen weeks into her pregnancy, she was sworn in by her father as a second lieutenant and started making plans to go to Virginia to begin her military service. Nearly six months into her pregnancy, she said, she told her new commanders that she was going to have a child, and they told her they didn?t think it would be a problem.

But they were wrong. Citing a contract she signed in 2007 when she enrolled in ROTC at age 18, the Air Force said she committed a fraud by not reporting a change in her medical condition, as indicated in the contract.

The Air Force ejected her, noting in its ruling, ?It is not the responsibility of the staff to constantly remind you of the terms of your contract.?

It further stated that her file contained eight forms in which she was briefed on the medical change reporting requirement. Edmonds said no one ever brought the issue up during her subsequent counseling sessions while she was enrolled at Marquette.

Edmonds said she asked the officer who informed her that she was being ejected from the Air Force, ?Had I terminated the pregnancy before my commissioning, would I have been able to commission at that point?? And, according to Edmonds, ?He said, ?Well. Technically, yes.? That was the hardest part of all of this. Someone telling me to my face that had I gotten an abortion, then I would be eligible for service.?

In a statement to CNN, a spokesman for the Air Force said it had no knowledge of that conversation.

?Any such counseling would have been inappropriate and I have seen no evidence of any such discussion,? Maj. Joel Harper wrote. ?However, Ms. Edmonds? case is under review by the Air Force Board for Correction of Military Records.?

Harper also said the Air Force would never tell non-married service members to give up their children, despite Goggins? letter to Ryan.

?The assertion that the Air Force would in any way encourage single parents to give up their children is unfounded,? he wrote.

The Edmondses and their attorney feel otherwise.

?This offends me on a number of different levels,? said Conway, the attorney. ?Because we?re telling young single woman that they cannot serve if they have a child. That they have to get married, give the baby up or have an abortion.?

Edmonds said she realizes there will be those who say she shouldn?t have gotten pregnant or have gone public with her story. She said that she may have made a mistake but that she now has a beautiful 10-month old son, Dominic, to show for it and he is no mistake. She is taking responsibility for her actions and raising her child.

She hopes that because she has told her story, the military will reconsider its policy on single parents being allowed to enlist.

As she waits for her situation to be resolved, Edmonds is working as a pediatric nurse, paying $100 a month ? with interest ? toward the $92,000 scholarship debt.

After all, Karen Edmonds points out, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta recently stated his commitment ?to removing all the barriers that would prevent Americans from serving their country? when hailing last year?s decision to abandon the ?don?t ask, don?t tell? policy for gay men and women serving in the military.

She hopes his words will apply to women like her daughter.

?I believe a woman has the right to choose life, go on to serve and reach (her) full potential, including being an officer in the Air Force,? Karen Edmonds said.

The Six Biggest Media Center Annoyances (and How to Fix Them)

The Six Biggest Media Center Annoyances (and How to Fix Them)The best thing about having an media center is that you're in control and can watch whatever you want. Unfortunately, you also get the pleasure of troubleshooting when plug-ins break, files won't play, and nothing works right. Here's how to take an HTPC that's driving you crazy and whip it back into shape so you can enjoy the show.

I love my home theater PC (HTPC), but it's not exactly perfect. For a long time, XBMC wouldn't download art, plot data, or cast information. The interface is difficult for my friends, who are used to cable TV. Using a keyboard and mouse on the couch sucks sometimes. We're willing to bet you've noticed this with your HTPCs and just deal with it, or you've held off building one because of similar annoyances. You don't have to settle for a second-rate experience. In this post we'll show you how to make your HTPC work the way you want it to.

My HTPC Won't Play Some of My Files

The Six Biggest Media Center Annoyances (and How to Fix Them)

Nothing's worse than sitting down to watch a new episode of your favorite show only to find out that the file is in a format your chosen media center can't play. You have two options on how to fix this:

  • Get a media center application that transcodes video on the fly. A few apps, most notably Plex, Subsonic, and PS3 Media Server all do this seamlessly. Transcoding makes sure you can watch any type of media on any device you happen to be using, including smartphones and tablets. You can either transcode on the source machine (if the files are stored on a home server or other computer) or your HTPC itself. Pick whichever computer has a faster processor to do the decoding.
  • The Six Biggest Media Center Annoyances (and How to Fix Them)Convert all of your media to a single file format that's compatible with everything. This method requires a bit more work up front, but has a potential for less problems when you're actually trying to watch your videos. Basically, you just need to go through your entire library and convert all of your media to a common format. You can then set up a system that converts it as soon as you download or rip it, so you don't have to do the extra legwork yourself. If you use uTorrent, we've shown you how to roll video conversion into your download process easily. Alternatively, you can use previously mentioned DropFolders with Handbrake, which will watch a download folder and convert whatever comes through it automatically, without you lifting a finger.

Whichever route you choose, the end result should be the same?all of your media should play seamlessly with whatever tool you prefer to watch it. The transcoding method tends to lock you into a specific app, but if you're okay with that, or you know that app is available for all of your devices and set-top boxes, then it's a bit more futureproof. Converting your music and movies on your own takes a lot more work up front, but leaves one fewer link in the chain that could cause problems when you're trying to watch your movies.

My HTPC Won't Add My Music/Movies/TV Shows To Its Library

The Six Biggest Media Center Annoyances (and How to Fix Them)

This is the issue that actually inspired this post. For months, my movies and TV shows were playable in XBMC, but it wouldn't download posters, DVD cover art, or background information for any of my files. The fix turned out to be somewhat simple: my filenames and directory structure made sense to me, but they made no sense at all to XBMC. We've talked about how to organize your media for XBMC before, and while normally the process is automatic, it didn't work for me. In my case, adding a whole drive with a bunch of unorganized folders and mixed media just caused XBMC to give up. All it required was a bit of organization.

The main change I had to make was to use a supported naming convention for my TV shows and movies so XBMC (or Plex, or anything else) could recognize what they were. Organizing movies and TV shows into separate folders helped a lot too. If you have a lot of files to rename (like I did,) grab an app like The Renamer (Windows) or NameChanger (OS X) to help speed up the process.

Home Theater PCs Are Too Expensive

Building an HTPC doesn't have to be an expensive proposition. We've shown you how to build one for less than $500, and another for around $200, but you can go even lower than that if you wish.

Your cheapest option is probably to grab a $99 Apple TV (less if you get a refurb!). It's a great set-top box to begin with, but you can take it up a notch by jailbreaking it and installing XBMC or Plex (although the current gen isn't jailbreakable, the 1G and 2G models are.) XBMC will let you play any video type, stream from other computers, and more that the Apple TV won't do on its own. Need more choices? Check out our guide to finding the best set-top box for you for even more affordable, feature-packed options.

Where Do I Store My Movies?

The Six Biggest Media Center Annoyances (and How to Fix Them)

You've probably heard us talk about streaming from a home server, from another computer, and even from smartphones, but where should you actually store your media? The best place to store your movies depends on how you plan to watch them. Here are a few scenarios:

  • Store and watch movies on your HTPC. This is obviously the easiest method: if you have a big enough hard drive in your HTPC, you can just put the movies there. However, if you need more than one hard drive, need to transcode videos, or want your HTPC to download stuff in the background, you'll need a pretty powerful HTPC, or you'll lose some performance while all that is going on. It's probably cheapest, but it's also a single point of failure, and it too needs to be on all the time. Also, if you have something like a jailbroken Apple TV, this isn't an option because it doesn't have internal storage.
  • Store and transcode movies on your main PC, watch them on your HTPC. If you need a place to store, transcode, and download media, you can always do this from your main computer. Your powerful computer can handle things like converting files and automatically downloading movies and TV shows as soon as they air, then you can stream them to your HTPC for watching. It's a power-hungry setup, and your desktop PC will have to be turned on pretty much all the time, but it's an option that doesn't require another computer.
  • Store movies on a NAS, watch them on your HTPC. This is our suggestion, mostly because your NAS, whether you buy one or roll your own, is designed for low power consumption. This is good, since you'll need to keep it on all day, which you probably don't want to do with your desktop computer. A NAS gives you multiple hard drives for massive storage, RAID for redundancy, and enough power to do all that renaming, transcoding, and even downloading for you?without such a harsh strain on your energy bill. Photo by Craig Morey.

It Feels Like I'm Using a Computer, Not a Set-Top Box

The Six Biggest Media Center Annoyances (and How to Fix Them)

We've tackled this topic before, so it's not terribly difficult to get your HTPC in order so anyone can flop down on your couch and use it. Your first step is to get and set up a remote for your HTPC to put people at ease?after all, you may be comfortable with just a keyboard and mouse, but many people aren't, so keep it stashed away unless you need it. Even better, grab your tablet or an old smartphone and use these iOS or Android apps to control your HTPC from anywhere in the house.

That takes care of the remote problem, but your HTPC's interface could probably use some work too, right? You can tweak a few settings in XBMC to make it more friendly to non-geeks right out of the box, though a new skin can also be helpful. If XBMC is too much trouble, give the more friendly Plex a shot, or try XBMC plugins like PseudoTV, which aim to make the interface more like a traditional channel guide?full of virtual "channels" loaded with TV shows and movies that you've downloaded.

I Can't Find Anything I Want to Watch

The Six Biggest Media Center Annoyances (and How to Fix Them)

Cutting the cord does mean giving up some programming. Whether you've had that cliffhanger spoiled before you got a chance to watch the episode or you just miss your live sports, there's a tradeoff. That doesn't mean you're out of options. There's always Hulu and Netflix, or you could drop a TV Tuner into your DVR and attach an HD over-the-air antenna to it to watch and record live television. Add the Blucop XBMC repository to unlock the Free Cable plug-in, which offers streaming video from just about any channel that puts its TV shows on the web, including ABC, CBS, Food Network, SyFy, and more. If your favorite network puts an episode on its site the day after it airs, you'll be able to see it right away.

Check out all of the official and unofficial repositories to see what's available, and our picks for the best XBMC add-ons too?you'll be surprised what you can stream directly to your HTPC without limiting yourself to the things you've downloaded or ripped. With all of the streaming options, you'll never run out of new material to watch. Then, once you've identified what you can't stream, you can turn to the internet for everything else.

Most HTPCs and set-top boxes go out of their way to be easy to use?after all, using them is supposed to be fun and get you right to your music, TV shows, and movies?they're supposed to enhance the experience, not detract from it. That said, if you're running into issues with your home theater setup, hopefully these suggestions will make it a little easier to manage. Once you have your library in good order and a system for where your files land and how they're accessed set up, and once you have the interface tweaked just the way you like, you'll never be comfortable going back to some proprietary cable provider's interface.

iPad Mini starts at $329, is thinner than a pencil

19 hrs.

"This isn't just a shrunken down iPad,"?Phil Schiller,?Apple's senior?vice president of worldwide marketing, said as he showed off the all new iPad Mini during Apple's media event on Tuesday. "It's an entirely new design."

The iPad Mini is 7.2 millimeters thin (that's about as thin as a pencil). It weights 0.68 pounds, which is as light as a standard pad of paper.?These measurements make the iPad Mini 23 percent thinner and 53 percent lighter than the third-generation iPad.?The tablet is a 7.9-inch device with a?1024??768 pixel resolution.?"Easy to remember. 7.9, 9.7," Schiller said, contrasting?the measurements of the?iPad Mini and the regular iPad.

There's a dual-core A5 chip, a FaceTime HD camera in the front, a 5MP iSight camera in the back, a Lightning connector, and all the usual iPad guts, of course. From the sounds of it, the iPad Mini contains the power of the iPad 2, with some slight upgrades (and a much smaller body). ?According to Schiller, the iPad Mini has a 10-hour battery life, which is about?on par with the battery life Google advertises for the Nexus 7.

Schiller took several jabs at Google's popular 7-inch tablet, ouf course, pointing out that???unlike the Nexus 7???the iPad Mini has over 275,000 apps specifically designed for tablets available to it, rather than a bunch of scaled-up phone apps.

"We took the time to create a product that was a concentration of, but not a reduction of, the original product,"?Apple's senior vice president of industrial Design, Jony Ive, pointed out in a video shown during the media event.

Like the iPad, the iPad Mini has a line of accessories such as Apple's Smart Covers, naturally. "It is every inch an iPad," a commercial shown during the event emphasized.

The iPad Mini starts at $329 for a 16GB Wi-Fi-only model. 32Gb and 64 GB Wi-Fi-only models are available for $429 and $529, respectively, while their LTE-capable counterparts are priced at $459, $559, and $659, for the 16GB, 32GB, and 63GB versions, respectively.

Pre-orders start on Oct. 26. The Wi-Fi-only models will ship a week later, on Nov. 2. The LTE-enabled models will ship about two weeks later.

International Entertainment News: 'Art of Ink Painting,' the Latest ...

'Art of Ink Painting,' the Latest Book from Self-Taught Russian Artist Valentina Battler, Brings a Musical Sensibility to the Field of Visual Arts

Classically trained pianist applies a distinct and multi-faceted approach to ancient Chinese Ink Painting tradition

NEW YORK, Oct. 23, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- Many have grown to appreciate and admire the works of concert pianist and now visual artist Valentina Battler. From her varied styles to the unique culminations they form, Battler displays her unique talent in her latest book, 'Art of Ink Painting'.

Synopsis:

This book presents the works of Valentina Battler, which span across a wide field of artistic culture: Fine Art, Poetry and Art Criticism. Her oeuvre attains high creative achievements in each of these spheres, and united together, it represents a significant and unique phenomenon.

"Battler explores the extent of human emotion through artistic representation of figure and form, combining Classical and Contemporary Chinese Ink Painting techniques. Her works on Xuan paper are rooted in the Yin Yang philosophy's principle of complementary contradiction, says Dr. Grant Pooke, Senior Lecturer at the University of Kent.

He continues, "Battler's background as a classically trained pianist, instructor and graduate of the St Petersburg State Conservatory is in evidence in various ways throughout the selection of images. Her aesthetic explores some of the nuanced and complex interactions between painting and music."

Her works on Yupo paper reflect an impressionistic style. Contrasting figure and fantasy with abstraction, she invites the viewers to experience the world re-interpreted through her own perspective as seen through the metaphorical 'looking glass.'

Forms and subjects are employed as representations of emotional expression; from contemplation, passion and aggression to expectation and disappointment. While subjects vary from dueling beasts and Samurai warriors to tranquil landscapes and delicate figures, these stylized and skillfully executed compositions radiate a dynamic energy through deliberate brush strokes and the softer abstract backgrounds into which the forms melt.

Dr. Pooke went on to add, "For Battler, these images 'lend themselves - technically and emotionally.' In these works, tempo and cultural influence are determined not just by the expressiveness of the subject matter but through the choice of material - whether Xuan or Yupo paper:

"Chinese painting is very classical 'music' for me - with its phrases,
articulation, accentuation, legato, staccato..., but painting on Yupo
looks like Jazz with theme and expression in it," she said.

"It is perhaps then, through the cadence and rhythms of a musical score; from fugue to caprice, from freeform jazz to fantasia. But while these images convey the impressionistic and the improvised, they also speak to a profound and deliberate cultural identity - and distinctness."

Overall, Valentina Battler's work represents how a concert pianist is expanding her work in music to encompass other art forms. Says Valentina, "It is really true -- I surprised myself. More over, the Chinese painting that I met at the top of my professional career, changed my destiny: I found 'silent music' in it and stopped playing piano, being changed playing piano to playing on Ink. I simply hear music as it is the image."

Cardinals forced to make another trip out West

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? The Giants sure are tough to eliminate this postseason.

Barry Zito and the Giants gave themself at least one more game in the NL championship series with a 5-0 victory Friday in St. Louis that forced Sunday's Game 6 back at AT&T Park.

Just where the NL West winners want to be with their season on the line ? in front of the raucous, orange towel-waving sellout crowd.

"It's great to be back in San Francisco. There is no tomorrow," Giants right fielder Hunter Pence said. "It's a unique feeling. It has brought the best out of us."

The wild-card Cardinals traveled out West again for a trip they certainly hoped they wouldn't have to make. Defending champion St. Louis leads the best-of-seven series 3-2, needing one more win for a World Series return.

St. Louis knows how hard winning the last one can be considering what this Giants team already did during these playoffs: winning three straight on the road at Cincinnati in the division series after falling behind 2-0.

"They've been doing this all year. Obviously, the Cincinnati series, here come the Giants," Cardinals third baseman David Freese said. "It's good for TV but it's disappointing in (our) sense."

Game 2 winner Ryan Vogelsong starts for the Giants for the second time this series against Chris Carpenter, who lost that matchup at San Francisco on Monday.

"No question, we want to win it as soon as we can. We wanted to do it last night," Carpenter said Saturday. "But, again, we have to get one win before they get two. We'll do whatever we can. If it's not tomorrow night we'll come in and do it again."

While the Cardinals took a day to rest ? Carpenter and a couple of pitchers did play some catch ? Pence and most of his team showed up at the ballpark in late afternoon to hit and work out even though manager Bruce Bochy gave his players the day off.

With Vogelsong on the mound, the Giants have to like their chances to push the series to a Game 7.

Vogelsong became the first Giants starter to make it through six innings this postseason when he went seven strong innings in a 7-1 Game 2 victory. He allowed four hits and one run for his first career postseason win.

"We all kind of feel like we've been in this situation before with Cincinnati," Vogelsong said. "And it's not over until the last out. I think both teams that are playing right now have proved that in the first round."

Giants general manager Brian Sabean wasn't surprised to see his team on the field Saturday for an optional practice ? realizing full well players didn't want to risk losing any momentum from the night before.

"Sometimes you wonder how much at this stage that there is a home-field advantage," Sabean said. "In some cases, because of the bullpens, it's probably as much as whoever gets the lead and can hold off the other ballclub from scoring will win the ballgame. We know what's at stake. We know that they're going to put a game against us. I'm sure Vogey will be ready."

St. Louis postseason ace Carpenter was looking forward to another chance, too.

He has been plenty reliable this time of year for the Cardinals, with his 10 postseason victories the most in franchise history. His stuff never felt right the last time out against the Giants, when he allowed two earned runs, five in all, and six hits in four innings.

"It doesn't matter if you're on the road, what game it is, it's the first one to win four games, and hopefully we can do that tomorrow," Carpenter said.

The 37-year-old Carpenter pitched two clinchers last October and went 4-0. He won the division series clincher and did it again in Game 7 of the World Series against the Texas Rangers.

So, why not add that NLCS distinction to his impressive October resume?

It's already been a memorable month for Carpenter, who came back to make three starts ? throwing just 17 innings ? late in the regular season after a complicated operation that removed a rib and two neck muscles to relieve numbness on his right side.

He is counting on commanding his fastball better this time out. His postseason ERA in two outings this year is 1.86.

"The last time out my stuff went backwards a little bit," Carpenter said. "I was trying everything I could to get outs but unfortunately it didn't work. I had some nice work in between that start and this start, I feel good and I'm looking forward to getting back out there."

The Giants returned to the Bay Area as soon as they could to get ready for Game 6, flying home overnight and landing at 2:30 a.m. But the Cardinals still had to go home after Friday night's game and pack their bags. They slept in their own beds and took off from St. Louis at midday Central time.

San Francisco, which made an improbable run to the 2010 World Series title, hopes to send St. Louis out of town empty-handed. The Giants won the NLCS in five games at their waterfront ballpark against the Cardinals in 2002 before falling short in a seven-game Series to the wild-card Angels.

The Detroit Tigers are waiting on their opponent after a four-game ALCS sweep of the New York Yankees.

Not that Bochy or Cardinals manager Mike Matheny can even think that far in advance, just yet.

"I don't necessarily see them as pesky as much as just talented," Matheny said of the Giants. "And the same kind of makeup that we have, they aren't going to go away and neither are we. And we knew that going into this thing. As soon as we won a couple of games at home there was nobody in there for a second under the belief that this was going to be a team that was going to just roll over. So we know that this team has the ability to do what they did, once again, in Cincinnati, running in there and doing something that hasn't been done all season. ... It's just a matter of execution, and they executed better than us yesterday."

Stop! Before You Take On Home Improvement Projects, Read This ...

When you are replacing your siding with veneer some positive things to keep in mind about that material are the functional advantages to other sidings. The veneers can protect your home quite well from damages, they are very easy to install, and require little to almost no maintenance which is very important.

If you are remodeling your kitchen, it is important that you add modern appliances. This is especially important if you plan on selling your house, as buyers do not want to use outdated appliances. Stainless steel appliances are the most popular nowadays and can easily be purchased in many stores.

If you would like to move but can?t thanks to the economy, view it as an opportunity to create a home you love through renovations and updates. Not only will many upgrades add value to your home when you are ready to sell, but you will be happier surrounded by the colors, patterns, and other design components you love.

If the snow on your roof melts very quickly, double check the insulation in your attic. Snow shouldn?t melt at all on a roof as long as the attic is keeping the heat in your house and the cold outside. Replacing the insulation will also decrease your heating bills as your heat is no longer being used to warm up the attic as well.

A great way to increase the value of a home is to clean out the grout in ceramic tile. This will instantly make old tile look newer, which, consequently, increases the value of your home. This is a quick fix that could mean a few extra dollars in the long run.

If your backyard is on a slope, consider building a deck to extend your living area. A sloped backyard in itself is not an ideal space for any type of activity. However, if you add a deck, you can furnish it with deck furniture and make an outdoor retreat where you can relax or entertain friends.

Consider starting a compost bin for your leftover produce scraps. There are several simple methods available and you will be helping the environment. At the same time, you are creating fabulous nutrient rich fertilizer. Compost fertilizer can be used for your flowers and shrubs in addition to being the perfect choice for your new fruits and vegetables.

You can give your kitchen an old fashioned look by shopping for old tins. Flea markets and thrift shops are full of vintage coffee, tea and candy tins that make great little storage spaces for your items. Use them to hide your utensils, cookies, flour or sugar. Attach little handmade labels to the top labeling what each one contains.

If you are short on cash and trying to figure out a way to create an unique backsplash for your kitchen, you can buy some nice patterned wallpaper. Meanwhile this may not be a permanent solution; you can switch out your designs often or keep it until you are able to afford tiling. You can even go as far as purchasing different patterned wallpapers and cutting them into small shapes to design your own wall mosaic as a backsplash.

Treat your wall to a dolly! No, not to a child?s toy but to a specially made anchor and toggle bolt! The shank of a dolly expands when you screw it tight. It can be used to hold a picture or other light object in place on the surface of a hollow wall where there is no underlying stud to nail to.

When renovating your home, make sure that you do it with the local area in mind. There is little point in building a large, outdoor deck area if it is constantly windy or putting up a pool in an area where it is constantly cold. These additions will not add value to the property and are, therefore, wasted money.

Paint a room. If you are looking for a home improvement project that takes a bit of time and effort, then painting may be for you. Make sure you have all the proper equipment to do the project, and go for it. A freshly painted room can do wonders for any home.

When hiring a licensed contractor to perform a home improvement project on your property, never agree to a repair or home improvement contract that requires full payment before satisfactory completion of all contracted work. If you have already made full payment, it is unlikely that problems with the work quality will be fixed without additional payment or legal action.

Face it ? not everyone needs ten cabinets for their dishes. If your small kitchen is in need of some extra space, consider removing the top row of cabinets. This frees up the wall space for artwork or decorative wall covering and gives you more room to be creative with your cooking surfaces.

Improving your home is important, and even on a tight budget, it can be done! In this article we have discussed some of the tips most often recommended for updating your home. Take a weekend and give a few of these tips a try! You?ll be pleasantly surprised by what you?re capable of doing on a budget.

Wal-Mart Battles Online Rivals with E-Commerce | Small Business ...

We?ve written previously about Wal-Mart?s efforts to keep online competitor Amazon at bay by discontinuing sales of the Kindle e-reader. Now it seems the world?s biggest retailer is taking things to the next level with an attempt to ratchet up its e-commerce presence. All businesses must, from time to time, head into new markets either to compete or simply to increase the number of customers they serve. Here?s a look at how businesses move outside their comfort zones to succeed and grow.

Cyber Super Stores

By the numbers. Moving confidently into the digital age, Wal-Mart outlined its e-commerce strategy recently by projecting profits of $9 billion in online sales by 2014. The retailer also plans to use Facebook to drive increased sales, including letting 22 million Facebook fans vote on toys they think Wal-Mart should temporarily discount. The Wall Street Journal

Out-Amazoning Amazon. Wal-Mart also goes head to head with its chief online rival Amazon this holiday season. The retailer recently announced a plan to introduce same-day delivery in select cities for orders placed online, a response to a similar same-day delivery service launched by Amazon. The move could be a sign of the retailers aggressive foray into a new market. Time Business

Far and Wide

The new kid in town. Of course, you don?t have to be Wal-Mart to venture into new markets and find new customers. Sometimes all it takes is recognizing the opportunities just outside your front door. For local businesses, one simple approach is to target new homeowners in your community or new people in your town or market, says blogger and entrepreneur Ashley Neal. Celebrate Atlanta

Around the world. When it comes to finding new customers, of course, the reverse is also true. Just as your business might find new customers around the corner, you may also find them around the world, says startup expert Martin Zwilling. The Internet and other technological advances enable the smallest startup to operate globally. Consider targeting customers for your products and services no matter where they might be. Startup Professionals Musings

Brand New Bag

How sweet it is. Exploring new business opportunities is another important step toward finding new customers and new markets. Consider investing in a hot franchise, for example. The important thing, says franchise expert Joel Libava, is to identify a new business model that adequately fits your needs. The Franchise King

Turn the channel. Finding new markets sometimes requires developing new ways to communicate with your customers. Every channel is different, explains entrepreneur Simon Gabay in this post about BizSugar.com, a sister site to Small Business Trends. Gabay explains the approaches any business owner must take when exploring a new way to reach audiences or customers. The Adhere Agency

Higher education. Businesses of all kinds must also educate customers about what they offer and why it?s important. The education must be a process, not a single event, explains business coach Dave Brock. Customers don?t come to you over night, especially if your products or services are new to them. You must educate your audience about your business?s value. Partners in Excellence
