In a bizarre, Broadway show-like presentation, Samsung unveiled its new flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S4.?There was singing. And dancing. And overacting from a little kid named Jeremy.
And yeah, there was the phone.?
Here's the the gist of what you need to know:?The Galaxy S4 is a 5-inch Android phone with a bunch of extra software features added by Samsung.
We have hands-on photos of the device for you here. We also have a breakdown of its most important features here.?
Check out the blog below to see all the announcements as they happened tonight.
6:36 PM | We're in and seated!
It was mass chaos outside of Radio City Music Hall. There's no way this event starts on time. There are still hundreds of people waiting to get in.
6:45 PM | 15 minute warning. (We'll see)
7:03 PM | Should be starting any minute now.
7:04 PM | We just got another "few minute" warning.
7:04 PM | By the way, there's an open bar here. Everyone is drinking wine and beer.
7:05 PM | The Internet here is spotty at best, so please be patient if we lose coverage.
7:10 PM | Lights are going down. Here we go!
7:10 PM | Now we're watching a recap of the teaser videos for the GS4 that we saw earlier this week.
7:10 PM | It's that Jeremy kid again. This is weird.
7:11 PM | $10 says the kid is actually here.
7:11 PM | Yup there he is.
7:11 PM | OMG an orchestra just rose from the stage floor.
7:12 PM | Jeremy won't let us see what's in the box. :(
7:12 PM | The host just made a bad joke about being a Rockette at the beginning of his career. Two people laughed.
7:12 PM | President of Samsung, JK Shin is on stage now.
7:14 PM | I would like to emphasize one thing...
We are committed to innovation.?
7:14 PM | "We have listened to you to understand what a smartphone should do"
7:15 PM | "What if we could record sound while taking a picture?" (Isn't that called video?)
7:15 PM | "Imagine touchless interfaces...we imagine great things can come from this."
7:17 PM | "What we'll show you tonight is the result of all of this."
7:18 PM | Here it is! The Samsung Galaxy S4!
7:18 PM | It looks very similar to the Galaxy S III
7:19 PM | Aw look. Jeremy let the phone out of the box. Good job Jeremy.
7:19 PM | The tagline for the Galaxy S4 is: "Life Companion"
7:19 PM | Features: Slimmer, yet stronger.
7:20 PM | 327 mobile operators in 155 countries. Available with 3G and 4G LTE.
7:21 PM | Now we're watching some demo videos. We'll have some photos for you very soon.
7:21 PM | Ryan Bidan, Samsung product marketing manager, is on stage now.
7:22 PM | Galaxy s4 is 7.9 mm thick, weighs 133 grams. Screen is a full five inches. "Less to hold and more to see." Full 1080p HD screen. 441 pixels per inch.
7:23 PM | Two colors: Black Myst and White Frost.
7:23 PM | Wow. Terrible jokes from the host guy. Called it a "Kryptonite" case. (It's polycarbonate.)
7:25 PM | 4G LTE, Wifi, Bluetooth 4.0, Infrared LED for a remote control. You can control your TV with your GS4
7:25 PM | Camera: 13 MP rear camera, 2 MP front camera.
7:26 PM | 16, 32, or 64 GB of storage plus SD card slot for up to 64 GB of more storage.
7:26 PM | Infrared gesture and temperature and humidity sensors.
7:26 PM | 2,600 mah battery.
7:27 PM | Ok this is weird. Now we're getting a broadway show.
7:27 PM | There's a ballerina. Her name is Stacy.
7:28 PM | This is corny and horrible and sad.
7:29 PM | Anyway. The point of this weird play is to show us some GS4 features. You can take photos and videos using the front and back camera at the same time. It's called dual picture.
7:30 PM | Now Jeremy is tap dancing.
7:33 PM | You can automatically erase blurry people from your photos.
7:34 PM | Now we're on a Shanghai set. Some kid is traveling to Shanghai. He doesn't speak the language. The phone translates everything for him.
7:35 PM | The Galaxy S4 can translate written words too.
7:35 PM | Has built in useful phrases and sentences.
7:37 PM | Want to see photos?
We got to play with the Galaxy S4 this morning. Check out our hands-on photos.
7:37 PM | Story Album: automatically creates albums from the same location and date.
7:38 PM | Anyway. All this play acting is a very odd way to announce a new phone.
7:40 PM | Home sync: A storage device that acts as your personal server to store files. It works with up to 8 users. Just tap your phone on the server and all your stuff syncs over WiFi.
7:42 PM | S Voice Drive: It syncs with your car over Bluetooth. It alerts you when you have incoming calls, etc. Navigation built in and it's voice activated.
7:43 PM | Here's the translator app.
7:44 PM | More jokes. We're not going to bother repeating them here. This is super corny.
7:45 PM | The Galaxy S4 touchscreen also works when you're wearing gloves.
7:46 PM | Samsung Hub: Samsung's curated app for music, apps, games, music, etc. It's kind of an alternative to the regular Google Play Android store.
7:47 PM | Knox: security features for enterprise users. This helps you keep your personal and business functions separate.
7:49 PM | Group Play: Lets you share music with other Galaxy phones. All phones can play the same song at the same time.
7:50 PM | Now the actresses on stage are dancing to the music they're sharing on their phones. It is so, so bizarre.
7:51 PM | ChatOn app lets you use both cameras to video chat. So you can show yourself and what's going on around you to the person you're chatting with. It's pretty neat.
7:52 PM | You can wave your hand over the screen to scroll through pages. The feature also works if you need to answer a phone call.
7:53 PM | Smart pause: When you look away from your phone while watching a video, the video automatically pauses. It restarts when you look back at the phone.
7:54 PM | When reading, just tilt the phone to scroll up or down.
7:55 PM | S Health: A fitness app that collects data like steps taken, diets, etc.
7:55 PM | S View Cover: This thing is cool. It has a tiny screen on the front that shows notifications and lets you control stuff like your music without opening the cover.
7:56 PM | Seems like we're wrapping up now...
7:56 PM | And now the cast is taking a bow. Broadway style.
7:57 PM | They're really making this seem like a broadway show.
7:57 PM | We're about to go through some demos.
7:58 PM | That's it! Thanks for joining us.
