BRISBANE, Australia (AP) ? Serena Williams' Australian Open preparations took a major hit Wednesday when she injured her left ankle and withdrew from the Brisbane International.

Playing in her first tournament since losing the U.S. Open final in September, Williams was serving for the match with a 6-2, 5-3 lead against Bojana Jovanovski of Serbia when she twisted the ankle and crashed heavily to the court.

The 13-time Grand Slam winner lay near the baseline for several minutes while getting medical attention. She was helped to a courtside chair and had the ankle re-taped before resuming the second-round match and losing the next point to surrender a service break to Jovanovski.

Williams limped through the next game, wincing in pain after at least two points, before securing a 6-2, 6-4 win to advance to the Brisbane quarterfinals in her first trip Down Under since winning the 2010 Australian Open title.

She withdrew from the Brisbane tournament later Wednesday after having tests that "confirmed that I have a left ankle sprain (and) that I probably shouldn't play on."

"I'm going to take a couple of days off ? not too many ? and see how I feel," Williams said in a statement. "I'm still hopeful of playing the Australian Open."

After hobbling into a postmatch news conference, the 30-year-old Williams had initially said she was "anticipating it'll be OK."

"I'm always thinking I can play on, but at the same time I don't want to stress it out right now," Williams said.

She was due to meet Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia in the quarterfinals on Thursday.

The Australian Open starts on Jan. 16 in Melbourne. Williams, a five-time winner at Melbourne Park, missed the 2011 Australian Open while she was recovering from two operations on her foot and blood clots in her lungs that kept her sidelined for about a year after the 2010 Wimbledon tournament.

She won two tournaments heading into the U.S. Open in August but, after losing the final to Sam Stosur, Williams didn't play another tournament last year due to injuries.

Williams said her first thought when she sprawled to the court near the baseline on Wednesday was "not again."

"That's what I felt," she said. "I was like, 'No way.'"

Williams usually wears a protective guard on her left ankle, but took it off during the second set because it was irritating another minor injury on her foot.

Stosur is already out after losing to Iveta Benesova 6-4, 6-2 in the preceding match on center court, extending a run of never advancing beyond the second round at her home tournament.

It was the 28-year-old Benesova's fourth win over a top-10 player.

The No. 54-ranked Czech had never taken a set off Stosur in four previous matches but now finds herself in a quarterfinal match against Australian Open champion Kim Clijsters.

"Hopefully it was just a bad day and I will bounce back next week and the week after," Stosur said. "I don't want to dwell on it.

"It's not the ideal start but I am not going to panic and think it's all lost."

Also, sixth-seeded Jelena Jankovic of Serbia beat Nina Bratchikova of Russia 6-3, 6-2 and Kaia Kanepi of Estonia ousted seventh-seeded Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova of Russia 6-0, 6-3.

On the men's side, second-seeded Gilles Simon of France beat Australian teenager James Duckworth 6-3, 7-5; third-seeded Alexandr Dolgopolov of Ukraine beat Igor Andreev of Russia 6-7 (3), 7-6 (9), 6-2; sixth-seeded Radek Stepanek of Czech Republic had a 7-6 (3), 6-2 win over Jarkko Nieminen of Finland; and No. 8 Bernard Tomic of Australia trounced Tatsuma Ito of Japan 6-1, 6-2.

Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus beat fifth-seeded Kei Nishikori of Japan 6-3, 6-4 to set up a quarterfinal match against either top-seeded Andy Murray or Gilles Muller.

Samsung Leads Smartphone Market in India

The Samsung Group has overtaken Finnish company Nokia to become India's leading smartphone seller. The Korean giants are also, reportedly, ready to become the world's leading smartphone seller, edging out Apple, Nokia and HTC.

According to figures revealed by market research firm Gfk, the company's domestic market share (by volume) stood at 38 percent, while that of share by value was 35.2 percent for November.

It was a little different a few months back. Nokia led by volume and Samsung had to be content to dominate sales in the value category, with 32.3 percent. Since then, Samsung has actually moved on to dominate market share on the global front as well, by edging out Apple in the third quarter ending September.

A far cry from last year's figure of 2.5 million units, the growth of the smartphone market in India was expected to touch 8.5 million by the end of 2011 and then double in 2012. The broad price range of the phones - Rs. 6,000 to Rs. 40,000, on average, is expected to meet the varying needs of a number of consumer categories.

Like us on Facebook

Samsung's greatest underlying strength is its affordability and flexibility across various operating platforms, including Windows, Android and the native Bada. If Samsung succeeds in its quest to become the world's leading smartphone seller, Apple and Nokia could well be fighting for survival.

However, Google might still be a force to reckon with, given the fact that handsets powered by its Android OS are selling extremely well across the world.

The final battle may well be between Samsung and Google.

Bachmann plays gender card as Iowa GOP vote nears (AP)

DES MOINES, Iowa ? Desperate for a late lift in Iowa, Republican Michele Bachmann is increasingly stressing a distinction in the presidential field: She's the only woman competing for the nomination.

The Minnesota congresswoman has made the gender card central to her closing argument. She's urging voters to embrace the idea of a "strong woman in the White House" and is molding herself as "America's Iron Lady" in the vein of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.

It's a play that carries as much risk as potential reward because some of the ardent religious conservatives she's aggressively courting have traditional views about gender roles.

History is not on Bachmann's side, either. Iowa has never elected a woman as governor or to its congressional delegation, a footnote shared only with Mississippi.

It was only a few years ago when GOP presidential nominee John McCain energized his campaign by putting Sarah Palin on the ticket, inspiring a hot pink-shirted army of voters the folksy former Alaska governor affectionately coined "mamma grizzlies." Palin opted out of the 2012 race and so far isn't pushing her followers in any direction.

Bachmann seldom underscored gender early in her campaign. She would sprinkle in mentions of motherhood and even shared an emotional story about how a miscarriage fortified her anti-abortion views. But she was mostly content letting voters notice the obvious difference on their own as she stood on debate stages surrounded by a bunch of men.

But as Bachmann darted around Iowa in the hectic days before Tuesday's caucuses, she hit the woman theme hard.

"I'm an Iowa girl. And one thing I remember about Iowa is we are a state of strong women," Bachmann told the lunch crowd at a 50s-themed burger joint in Mount Ayr. "We need a strong woman to turn this country around, right?"

Longtime residents Margaret Bickers and Mary Davenport, sitting in a booth near Bachmann, nodded in agreement.

"Women are just more passionate than the men," Bickers told a reporter. "We need a woman who is not afraid to vocalize that passion and effect change."

"It takes a woman to get things done," Davenport chimed in. Both said they were inclined to caucus for Bachmann.

Bachmann dispenses warm hugs as readily as simple handshakes. She'll sometimes run her hand along another woman's back during conversations, extended contact her male challengers tend to avoid.

When a 90-year-old woman shared that she was a mother of 12, Bachmann crouched by her side to hear more. "What a blessing," the candidate said.

It gave Bachmann an opening to share a favorite biographical detail, that she's a mother of five and foster parent to 23 more. While conveying her philosophy of government cost-cutting, she often tries to connect with fellow women by describing herself as the family coupon clipper who frequents consignment shops for clothes.

Tamara Scott, who runs the Iowa chapter of Concerned Women for America, tagged along on Bachmann's recent 99-county tour and served as the warm-up act during several stops. Scott highlighted Bachmann's role as a mother to many as evidence of compassion but also stressed the congresswoman's give-no-ground debate performances as proof of her toughness.

"Gutsy has never been so gorgeous," Scott told one audience.

Still, Union County GOP chairwoman Yvonne Kinkade suspects Bachmann could have trouble breaking through in farm country because she's a woman.

"I've noticed that when her name is mentioned sometimes that there's a lot of men that wouldn't vote for a woman," said Kinkade, who counted herself among the undecided after visits by a few candidates this past week. "A lot of them are the head of the households in these farming communities."

Bachmann advisers say her recent reliance on the Thatcher comparison is meant in part to remind voters of a prominent woman on the world stage, particularly a staunch ally of Ronald Reagan. Plus, Bachmann just finished reading a Thatcher biography.

Bachmann's approach to the gender issue stands in contrast to Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton four years ago. Clinton largely played it down, favoring pantsuits over skirts and stressing instead her experience and resolve.

"I'm not running as a woman. I'm running because I think I'm the best qualified and experienced person for president," she often told campaign audiences.

When Clinton dropped out of the 2008 race, only then did she acknowledge the historic nature of her candidacy.

"Although we weren't able to shatter that highest, hardest glass ceiling this time, thanks to you, it has about 18 million cracks in it and the light is shining through like never before," she said in her concession speech, referring to the 18 million votes she received during the primaries.

Bachmann looked primed to shatter Iowa's glass ceiling in August when she won the Iowa GOP's straw poll. But her standing tumbled soon after and she has struggled to recover that summer magic.

Spirituality can never be uprooted from India: American guru

Spirituality is so deeply ingrained in India that it can never be uprooted from this country, says a leading American yoga guru who has spent six decades spreading Kriya Yoga and 'Sanatan Dharma'.

The widely travelled Swami Kriyananda says that yogis and god seekers have so intensely meditated for thousands of years in this country that one can feel spirituality even in the air.

'India, of all ancient cultures, has clung to the highest truth, that god is the only reality, that this universe is His dream, and that our duty is to reunite our souls with Him,' the 85-year-old said in an interview.

'That is why so many great souls have been born (in India),' he added.

Kriyananda, one of the few direct followers of the iconic Paramhansa Yogananda who are still alive, however, finds India more materialistic today compared to his first visit way back in 1958.

'But it is a necessary step for India,' Kriyananda, who was originally J. Donald Walters, told IANS. 'She needs to take her rightful place among the great nations of the world.

'But she will never be able to escape her spiritual roots. She will become more intensely spiritual than before - in time.

'No, I don't really feel as at home in India today as I felt 50 years ago. But that will change.'

Kriyananda was 22 years old and a callow American in his own words when he met the Gorakhpur-born Yogananda in 1948 in Los Angeles and instantly became his disciple.

This happened after he had read Yogananda's 'Autobiography of a Yogi', one of the most celebrated works in spiritual literature.

Kriyananda spent four years with Yogananda until the latter died in 1952. Since then, he has spent more than six decades espousing 'Sanatan Dharma', Kriya Yoga and ways to meditate -- all based on Yogananda's teachings.

In 2003, he shifted to India with a small band of American and Indian disciples. All of them have worked silently on the spiritual front without hankering after publicity.

Kriyananda, who will release in Mumbai Jan 8 his just published biography of Yogananda, considers himself more Indian than American since his own Guru was an Indian.

'I have had an opportunity to meet many great souls (in India). To me, the greatest saint I ever met was my own guru,' he said of Yogananda, who was born in 1893 into a spiritually inclined middle class Bengali family.

Apart from authoring over 140 books, Kriyananda has composed more than 400 pieces of music, taken around 15,000 photographs and set up eight spiritual communities.

He has travelled extensively in India, meeting holy men and saints. These have included yoga masters who have lived for over 100 years.

And despite failing health and a recent blood transfusion, Kriyananda has just finished a work of fiction and is working on producing three movies, including one on Yogananda.

The American, who speaks Bengali too, does not believe he can be called a Western spiritual export to India.

'I first came to India in September 1958. For me, it was like coming home. I know I belonged here. I had always felt a stranger elsewhere.'

Buyer's Remorse: Dealing With Holiday Debt

Now that the holiday gifts are opened some shoppers have been hit with an unsettling credit card reality.? But don?t worry.? Area credit experts say there is help.

Consumer Credit Counseling Service of Alaska Chief Executive Office Larry Snider said this happens when we lose control with our cards and do not remember how much we have purchased.

?There are many other related expenses that are associated with the holidays,? Snider said.? ?Festivities. Family gatherings.? Extra costs for those things that are beyond the basic living expenses.? Those are the areas that can become a surprise.?

After all that spending, if you do not have enough in your account, Snider said now is the time to make a plan.

For a reality check:

  • First put your monthly budget on paper starting with your take home pay.?
  • Subtract all living expenses from it, like a mortgage, rent and groceries.?
  • If the leftover total does not cover all your debt, and adding a part time job is not an option either, it might be time to consider a debt management plan.

?The consumer would pay a fixed amount to the agency,? Snider said. ??Then the agency disperses monthly amounts to the creditors. And most creditors at that point will reduce interest.? And they will accept a lower payment to receive the balance in full over a period of time.?

The other big concern with holiday spending is fraud.?

If you receive a call from your bank or credit card company Snider said first file a police report, then call the Federal Trade Commission.? It also can't hurt to also call all three credit reporting agencies.?
